Title: Plant production

1
Plant production
  • Lesson 5 Plant maintenance

2
Types of house plant
  • Cacti have fleshy, water storing stems. They may
have sharp spines but no leaves.
  • Flowering plants are kept for their attractive
    flowers.

3
Ferns and foliage plants
  • Ferns do not flower. They grow leaves from
underground stems and need cool, damp conditions.
  • Foliage plants are kept for their attractive or
    coloured leaves

Pricking out
  • Seedlings need to be pricked out from a seed
tray, because they will probably have grown too
    close together.
  • This means moving them to a pot where they will
    have more room to grow.

5
Potting on
  • When plants outgrow their pot, they are said to
    be pot-bound.
  • Pot-bound plants have roots poking out of the
    bottom of the pot.
  • Pot-bound plants have to be potted on into a
    larger pot.

6
Dead heading
  • Dead heading is removing dead flowers from a
    plant.
  • If this is done regularly, the plant may produce
    more flowers.
