The fun side of data
  • All those questions cover data that you should
be familiar with handling, throughout the school
    year
  • Interpreting the data files you send us, and
turning them into meaningful output is how we in
the analysis team have fun with data

31
Management information and
Analysis
  • The Analysis team
  • Monika Ciurej (Principal Management Info.
    Analyst)
  • Rana Choudhury Michelle Harris
  • Tai Cheng Carly Kling
  • Katherine Brind
  • We have lots of fun with data!

32
The fun side of data
  • Where does the Analysis team get their data from?
  • The data we receive will be checked by the data
collection team for quality and accuracy

33
The fun side of data
  • What data are we interested in?
  • Census
  • Roll figures SEN
  • Key Stage 2 and 3 teacher assessments
  • Free School meals
  • ethnicity pupil voice
  • Key Stage 1 assessment Absence
  • Staffing data
  • Foundation Stage Profile EAL

34
How do we report back?
  • As you have already heard, your data returns to
    MIA are crucial
  • Examples include
  • Producing school budgets
  • Tracking children who are potentially missing
    from education
  • Tracking vulnerable children
  • Verifying free school meals information

35
How do we report back?
  • Some of the uses the analysis team
  • have for your data are
  • Producing school profiles
  • Exclusions analysis
  • Absence and Attendance analysis
  • Calculating Local and Government Performance
    indicators

36
Southwark School Profile
  • The Southwark School Profile summarises data from
the school census, staffing data return,
Foundation Stage, Key Stage 14, attendance and
exclusions data, Value Added, and target setting.
  • The report is available to you through the secure
    site https//eduonline.southwark.gov.uk/data/

37
Southwark School Profile
  • Where available for each bit of summarised data
there will always be a comparative Southwark
    average and a National average
  • The school profile is available to most LA staff
    and school governors
  • Most of the data is published earlier than
    nationally produced documents

38
Pupil and school characteristics
39
Staffing Data
40
Attainment data
  • Foundation Stage Profile
  • Key Stage 1
  • (Key Stage 2-4) obtained from other sources
  • Match attainment data to pupil characteristics
(i.e. census), for more in depth analysis
  • Calculate value added
  • We use the data you provide to produce school
    profiles

41
Foundation Stage
42
  • How does this school compare to Southwark and
    National results at Foundation Stage?

43
Key Stage 1

- MATHS
45
The fun side of data
  • The census data and attainment data that you
provide to MIA and the DCSF is also used in a
host of other documents and applications.
  • These come out or are updated at different times
of year but are based on the same national
    dataset

46
The fun side of data
  • DCSF School Performance tables
  • Available at www.dcsf.gov.uk/performancetables/
  • RAISEonline
  • Fisher Family Trust

47
DCSF School Performance tables
  • Similar to the league tables published in the
    press (but more detailed)
  • Along with Ofsted reports and school
prospectuses, the school performance tables will
be looked at by parents when considering picking
    a new school
  • Provide information from pupil roll numbers to
attainment data to contextual value added

48
RAISEonline
  • RAISEonline is a website that Ofsted maintain.
  • The data in it is what inspectors have access to
before coming to inspect a school
  • It contains analysis of both attainment data
(e.g. Key Stage 1-4) and pupil and school
    characteristics

49
Fischer Family Trust
  • Fischer Family Trust (FFT) are an organisation
that work closely with the DCSF and local
    authorities
  • They work with pupil attainment data along with
pupil and school characteristics data (they
    receive the data centrally)
  • Produce a large range of pupil and school level
analysis. Most commonly used are the school and
    pupil level estimates (target setting)

50

73
Fischer Family Trust
  • FFT use complicated statistical models to work
out estimates for pupils future attainment
  • However all analysis is based on the national
database of census information and attainment
results from FSP and KS1 through to KS4
  • Things like a pupils gender and date of birth,
or the schools free school meal figures can have
an effect on their estimated attainment at Key
    Stage 2 or 3.
