  • Leading cause of preventable death
  • Leading cause of preventable disability
  • Reduces life span by 12 years in US 20 in third
    world
  • 1 public health issue in CO, US and the world
  • Kills 50 of all adult smokers

Purpose of the Grant Program
  • To provide funding for community-based and
    statewide tobacco education programs designed to
  • reduce initiation of tobacco use by children and
    youth
  • promote cessation of tobacco use among youth and
    adults and
  • reduce exposure to secondhand smoke

Legislative Requirements
  • Established formal Review Committee
  • Funded programs must be consistent with the State
    Strategic plan
  • At least 50 must be awarded to grantees for
    evidence-based programs and programs that prevent
    and reduce tobacco use among youth

  • At least 15 must be awarded to grantees to
    reduce health disparities
  • Up to 15 shall be awarded to grantees of the
    Tony Grampsas youth services program

  • For 05-06 and 06-07, agreed to use existing
    Colorado State Strategic Plan
  • Commissioned the development of a new State
    Strategic plan

  • Served over 20,000 hard-to-reach disparate youth
    and parents
  • K-12 Tobacco Prevention Initiative
  • Funded 475 schools within 34 districts
  • Reached over 290,000 students
  • Colorado QuitLine
  • Served over 70,000 smokers
  • Reaching 6.8 of smokers in Colorado
  • The service has increased quit rates from 28
    percent to 36 percent by offering a free
    eight-week supply of the patch

  • 46 workgroup members developed a Tobacco
    Disparities Strategic Plan
  • Funded nine agencies to build capacity
  • Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act
  • Launched a statewide educational campaign,

  • Call center assisted close to 2,000 people
  • 54,172 people visited www.smokefreecolorado.org
