Customs Action Plan
  • A new approach to Customs based on a
    comprehensive risk management system that
    incorporates the principles of self-assessment,
    advance information and pre-approval.
  • Streamlined processing for low risk.
  • Intensified processing for higher and unknown
    risk.
  • A fair and effective sanctions regime.
  • Supported by technology, Electronic Data
    Interchange and internet.

Manley Ridge 30 Point Plan
  • Following terrorist attacks on New York and
    Washington.
  • Intensive effort by governments of Canada and the
    United States.
  • Governor Ridge and Deputy PM Manley signed the
    Smart Border Declaration December 12, 2001.
  • NEXUS-Air was identified as one of the
    initiatives.

NEXUS Highway
  • Joint Canada/United States alternate means of
    reporting program for pre-approved low risk
    travellers at the land border.
  • Prior to acceptance into the program, all
    participants must undergo a vigorous screening
    process, including an officer interview.
  • At time of entry, NEXUS participants must present
    their photo ID cards and a proximity card which
    brings their picture up on the screen for the
    customs inspector.
  • 80 fee for participants, valid for 5 years,
    revenue shared equally.

    British Columbia and Sarnia/Port Huron in
    Ontario.

  • 50 annual fee (full cost recovery).
