OneSAF User Conference
The Use of OneSAF in the OneTESS
Program Dave Fisher Wayne

Agenda
  • Introduction
  • The One Tactical Engagement Simulation System
    (OneTESS) Overview
  • OneTESS Network Requirements
  • OneSAF use in OneTESS
  • OneTESS Modeling and Simulation (MS) Overview
  • OneSAF use in OneTESS MS
  • OneSAF use in OneTESS Engagement Methodology (EM)

3
OneTESS Overview
  • OneTESS provides realistic simulated combat
engagements in outdoor or built up area
    environments with actual weapons platforms
sending and receiving electronic bullets over
    radio frequency networks
  • OneTESS is a research and development program
developing a standard and prototype to replace
the highly successful, but operationally limited,
laser-based training and testing systems in use
    over the last 25 years

4
OneTESS Network Requirements
  • The OneTESS is required to provide wireless
networking of several thousand highly mobile
    entities executing combat engagement operations
  • Infrastructure-based mode and stand-alone mode
    with no infrastructure
  • Engagements must be adjudicated in real-time as
    perceived in real world engagements
  • Provide exercise control and reliable data
collection of engagement and tracking information

5
OneTESS MS Overview
  • OneTESS MS supports analysis of OneTESS
    requirements and network design decisions
  • Built using QualNet network discrete event
    simulation
  • QualNet provides networking thousands of entities
using standard OSI stack and IEEE 802.n wired and
    wireless services and protocols
  • Provides collection and analysis of network
    statistics
  • Designed to run combat engagements across a wide
    range of combat scenario
  • Using OneTESS developed engagement adjudication,
exercise control and data collection protocol
    models
  • Using OneSAF generated scenarios and simulation
    data

6
OneSAF Use in OneTESS MS
7
OneSAF Use in OneTESS EM
  • Many OneSAF Physical Model Knowledge Acquisition
Document (PKAD) methodologies are implemented for
    OneTESS Build 0
  • Some have been modified for use in the live
    training domain
  • When available, OneSAF Engagement Data is used
    for the PKAD Methodologies

8
OneSAF Methodologies used in OneTESS EM
  • OneSAF (PKAD) methodologies implemented
  • Delivery Accuracy
  • Delivery Accuracy for Direct Fire Weapons
  • Delivery Accuracy for Indirect Fire Weapons
  • Delivery Accuracy for Fragmenting and Point
Detonating Small Caliber Direct Fire Weapons

9
OneSAF Methodologies used in OneTESS EM
  • Vulnerability
  • Vulnerability from Direct Fire Weapons for
    Dismounted Infantry
  • Vulnerability from Direct Fire Weapons for Ground
    Vehicles
  • Vulnerability from Indirect Fire Weapons for
    Dismounted Infantry
  • Vulnerability from Indirect Fire Weapons for
    Ground Vehicles
  • Vulnerability from Conventional Mines
  • Improvised Explosive Devices

10
OneSAF Methodologies used in OneTESS EM
  • Other
  • Effectiveness of Air Defense Artillery (ADA) and
    Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM)
  • Combat Damage Repair

11
Other OneTESS Methodologies
  • OneTESS created algorithms
  • Wound Model
  • Dispersion and Probability of Kill Scaling
  • Dud/Misfire
  • Sensor and Communications Kills
  • (only Communications Kill for OneTESS Build 0)
  • Canister Rounds
  • Suppression from Indirect Fire
  • Entity Shadowing
  • Direct Fire Hit Determination
  • Modified the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement
    System (MILES) Lethality Effects Assessment
    Routine (LEAR) Implementation
  • The Engagement Software will evolve into a Common
    Training Instrumentation Architecture (CTIA) Live
    Training Transformation (LT2) Product Line
    component.

12
OneSAF Data used in OneTESS EM
  • When available, OneSAF Engagement Data is used
    for the PKAD Methodologies
  • OneSAF Data Availability for OneTESS Build 0
  • Direct Data 66.5
  • Direct Data or Surrogated (by OneSAF) - 91.5
  • Missing Data 8.5
  • Missing data filled in by finding surrogates
  • Surrogates will be coordinated with OneSAF to
reduce fair fight issues between OneTESS and
    constructive simulations

13
Other Data used in OneTESS EM
  • Engagement Data for OneTESS algorithms
  • Data sources include
  • Subject Matter Experts (SME)
  • Data produced based on iterative tests to produce
    expected outcomes
  • Data from the Training Centers
  • Other military agencies

14
Summary
  • OneSAF is used to support validation of the
    OneTESS engagement MS
  • OneSAF EM algorithms (PKAD) are implemented in
    OneTESS
  • When available OneSAF data is used to feed the EM
    algorithms
