Objectives - by the end of the lesson you will be
able to
  • describe the rules and procedures relating to
    range and weapon safety that the Coach must know
  • state the Regulations that govern rifle shooting
    by ATC personnel

Conduct of Range Practices
  • Under the control of an appropriately Qualified
    or Authorised RCO
  • Only approved MOD/NRA/NSRA targets to be used
  • All personnel must wear ear protection whilst
    firing is taking place
  • All firing to be from the prone position

Personnel required for a range practice
  • Range Conducting Officer
  • Safety Supervisors
  • Coaches
  • OiC Waiting Detail
  • Ammunition Orderly
  • First aider
  • Firers!

Eligible for RCO Training
  • RAFVR(T) Officers
  • ATC Warrant Officers
  • Civilian Instructors
  • CWOs (over 20 years of age)
  • Regular Service helpers (appropriate to rank)

Qualification and Authorisation of RCOs
  • governed by rules set out in Pam 21
  • amplified for RAF and ATC by Strike Command Staff
    Instructions and ACP 20A
  • superseded from time to time by policy letters
    (until next amendment is published!)

Supervision Ratios
  • Inexperienced Firers
  • Minimum - one Safety Supervisor per two cadets
  • Preferably 1 1
  • Experienced Firers
  • RCOs discretion subject to safety and control
  • Practices Involving an Advance
  • 1 1 mandatory !

The Safety Supervisor
  • Qualified
  • Mature enough to understand the responsibilities
  • Capable of exercising control over firers
  • Briefed
  • Duties
  • Monitor weapon handling and assist with
    problems
  • Ensure ear protection worn - correctly
  • Ensure firer engages correct target
  • Move with firer and help to control rate of
    advance
  • Inspect weapon(s) and show clear
  • Segregate misfired/damaged rounds
  • Action in emergency

  • Responsibility of RCO to check firers are
    eligible but coaches can help by checking Fs3822
  • criteria set out in ACP 20A ACTI 43
  • covers staff and cadets
