21. Summarize the problem by indicating the
species, what is to be accomplished and if any
specific drugs were to be used.
- Species- Beef Cattle
- Problem- Synchronizing cycling and anestrous
suckling cows to calve at similar dates. - Drugs to be used- CIDR implant (progesterone) and
Lutalyse (PGF2a)
3Diagram the drug treatment regime (include days
between treatments if appropriate)

5Within the species you are working with, how does
the reproductive state of the animal effect the
ability of the treatment to work? Are there
reproductive states for which the treatment will
not work?
- The protocol will work with slightly prepubescent
heifers andanestrous cows. Works on cycling
females as well.
6How do you suggest the client determine if the
treatment regime works?
- He will be able to observe standing heat for most
of the animals. The client can visually heat
check from days 8-10 to determine estrous
activity. He can pregnancy check the herd after
breeding.
7What specifically will you recommend to the
client about labor needs to implement the cycle
management and manage parturition?
- The amount of labor needed to can be reduced by
giving the Lutalyse injection on day 7 and
removing the CIDR at the same time - This reduces the number of times you must run the
cattle through a head gate. - The amount of labor needed to check heat can be
reduced by timed breeding 48-54 hours after CIDR
removal. - The amount of labor needed to manageparturition
will decrease dramatically for the due dates of
all bred synchronized cows compared with natural
service. - By using this breeding protocol, the client will
be able to sell a large number of calves with
very similar birth dates.
