2
Three Main Parts
  • The Crust
  • The Mantle
  • The Core

3
Outer Layer Surface and Crust
  • The Earths surface is mostly water, basalt, and
    granite.
  • The part of the crust under the surface is
mostly silicon, aluminum, calcium, sodium and
    potassium
  • The crust is between 5 and 10 km thick under the
oceans and between 35 and 70 km on the
    continents.

4
The Mantle
  • The entire mantle is about 2,900 km thick.
  • The upper mantle is rigid.
  • The lower mantle flows very slowly like melted
    plastic.
  • The mantle is made of silicon, oxygen, magnesium,
    iron, aluminum, and calcium.
  • The top of the upper mantle is about 1,600 F.
At the bottom it is about 6,700 F.

5
The Core
  • The core is very hot and dense
  • The liquid outer core is made of nickel and iron
alloy, and is about 2300 km thick.
  • The solid inner core is mostly iron, and is about
    1200 km thick.
  • The temperature of the inner core may be over
13,000 F., which is hotter than the surface of
    the sun.
