Title: The language of arguments

1
The language of arguments
  • Infer / inference This is where we can deduce
one thing from another, rightly or wrongly. Often
we can infer the conclusion from a reason or two.

In furs! She killed my brother
2
Infer ( a long spell!)
What could you infer from these statements?
  • There were very few people on the beach today.
  • David Beckham was limping after the match on
    Saturday.
  • You look very tanned.
  • My cleaning lady has been ill for the last three
    weeks.
  • The chain came off my bike on the way to work
    today.
  • My sister failed her driving test yesterday.
  • Terry drank a whole bottle of vodka last night.

3
The language of arguments
  • Imply / implication This is where one statement
means that a second will follow.
  • E.g. Ipswich Town didnt get into the premiership
last season.. Implies that they were not good
    enough!
  • Do not confuse imply with infer!!!!!
  • If R implies C. Then C can be inferred from R
  • If Ipswich Town are rubbish then you can infer
that they are unlikely to go up this season
    either!

4
Imply
What do you think that these may imply?
  • Bob won the majority of votes at the last
    election.
  • That dead tree is too near our house.
  • Glenn has a large collection of fishing books.
  • It took me a day and a half to drive to the Isle
    of Skye.
