Social Studies 11

Global Goals
  • We have 2 main objectives in this course
  • Gain knowledge.
  • Acquire skills.

3
Responsibilities
  • Expect your teachers to select and present
    material to make this possible.
  • You must look after your own learning. Only you
    can do so.

4
Your Responsibilities
  • For us to meet these goals you must take personal
    responsibility
  • Be responsible.
  • Act maturely.
  • Try to learn.

Your Responsibilities
  • Do all assignments to the best of your ability.
  • Put in the necessary time.
  • Get help if you dont understand something.

9
Your Responsibilities
  • Ensure your work comes in on time.
  • Unless an extension is granted, late deductions
will be applied to assignments submitted late.
  • No reduction will be applied that reduces a mark
below 50, so it is always worth handing work in.
  • No lates are allowed on homework checks.

10
Assignments
  • Nothing is given as busy work.
  • Every assignment has a purpose and if you dont
    know what it is, ask!

11
Assignments
  • All written work should be word-processed, typed,
    or neatly handwritten.
  • Always include a heading with your name, the date
and the title of the assignment.
  • Long assignments require a title page with all
    heading information.
  • All Research assignments require a proper
    bibliography.

12
Homework
  • Expect to do some every day. This may involve
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Preparing assignments.
  • If you are not assigned something specific,
tackle any problems that you have identified,
    like spelling difficulties.

13
Your Responsibilities
  • Fix your own problems
  • Go over things that went wrong.
  • Eliminate weaknesses.

14
Tests
  • Expect to be tested regularly.
  • There will be a test at the end of every unit and
a final exam, worth 20 of your overall mark at
    the end of the semester.
  • Test writing is a skill that can be learned.

15
Marks
  • Mr. Benoy marks in two ways
  • Homework checks are process marks. He is looking
for effort and completion and is not stressing
    specific content.
  • Homework checks are generally marked out of 3.
  • Assignments are marked for content and
composition and are valued at 10 or more marks.
  • Presentations will be marked according to
criteria set when work is assigned.

16
Marks
  • Marks are cumulative. We will not use weighted
    bins.
  • You can keep track of your marks and understand
how much weight each assignment has.
  • Marks are posted at the back of the room. Check
    them regularly.

17
Marks
  • 80 of your mark is based on course work.
  • 20 of your mark is based on the provincial final
    exam.

18
Extra Help
  • Extra help is usually available.
  • Mr. Benoy is usually at school from 800 a.m. to
    430 p.m. unless in meetings.
  • Tutorial times are 255-315 Monday and Fridays
    -- or
  • Drop in or make an appointment.

19
Decorum
  • Respect the rights of others
  • Help maintain a quiet learning environment.
  • Dont harass others.
  • Respect other peoples things.
  • Dont damage things that belong to other
students, your teacher, or the school.

20
Last Thoughts
  • Whenever you are out of the room I must know
exact locations (in case of emergency). Return
    promptly.
  • Raise your hand if you have a comment or
question. This allows a proper speaking order.
  • And dont forget to remove your hat in class!
