  • Teddington, UK

MP0602 Joint Working Group Meeting, Brno 27-28
August 2007

  • Jirí Vízdal
  • Andy Watson
  • Alan Dinsdale
  • MP0602 thermodynamic database will continue to
    be managed by this group

4

  • In-Sb-Sn, In-Sn-Zn

5
The Atlas
  • The Atlas of lead free solders phase Diagrams
is under construction, to be published Autumn
2007 . based on the data in the COST531 database

6
What do we mean by critical assessment ?
  • Critical assessment is a process to generate a
set of reliable data or diagrams which are self
consistent and represent all the available
experimental data for the system eg phase
diagram, enthalpies of mixing, vapour pressures,
  • It involves a critical analysis of the
    experimental data (Hultgren, Massalski etc)
  • .. followed by a computer based optimisation
process to reduce the experimental data into a
    small number of model parameters
  • .. using rigorous theoretical basis underlying
    thermodynamics

7
Database for MP0602
  • Will use the COST531 database as its basis
  • Updated as new critically assessed data become
    available
  • Addition of
  • P (to allow for modelling of interface between
    solder and electroless Ni contacts)
  • Al, Mg (for Zn-Al based high temperature solders)
  • Ge, Ga (for Zn-Al based high temperature solders)
  • Ti, Co (some indication that these may be useful)
  • In will be still be in database but not thought
to useful for high temperature solders

8
What is available new binary systems
  • All Al containing binary systems
  • Al-Sn, Al-Zn, Al-Mg .. except (Al-Pd)
  • Most Mg containing binary systems
  • except Au-Mg, Bi-Mg, Co-Mg, Ge-Mg, Mg-P,
  • Mg-Pb, Mg-Pd, Mg-Sb
  • Most Ge containing binary systems
  • except Ge-Mg, Ge-Ni, Ge-P, Ge-Pd
  • Most Ga containing binary systems
  • except Ag-Ga, Au-Ga, Cu-Ga, Ga-Pd
  • Limited P containing systems
  • Ni-P and Sn-P (currently being assessed in
    Vienna)
  • Al-P, Ga-P, P-Sb are OK
  • Other binary systems require assessment or
    revision

  • Sn-Sb with Bi, (In)
  • Ag-Bi with Au, Sn
  • Au-Sn with Ni
