Toward the final frontier China's successful
launching last week of its second manned
spacecraft, the Shenzhou 6, coming just two years
after its historic first flight, demonstrates
that the country's space program is making steady
progress. China's goal, obviously, is to become a
"space power." In contrast, Japan's manned
space program faces uncertain prospects, due
largely to the downsizing of the International
Space Station (ISS) project. The nation has yet
to establish a long-term program. Of course,
there is a big difference in the two countries'
space programs. While China is pushing its space
program as an integral part of its
military-technology development, Japan is
internationally committed to the peaceful use of
space. It is hoped, nevertheless, that China's
latest launch will stimulate public debate in
this country on how to develop its space
program. (

Lu warns about China's ambition to dominate
space CNA , TAIPEI Wednesday, Nov 02, 2005,Page
3 Vice President Annette Lu (???) spoke out
yesterday on the military ambitions underlying
China's space technology development, saying the
technological achievements of the communist
regime pose a major threat to freedom and
democracy. According to Lu, although China
claims the launch of its Shenzhou 6 spacecraft
last month was for peaceful purposes, Beijing
believes that whoever dominates space will secure
supremacy on earth and the initiative to start a
war. In contrast, she noted, the FORMOSAT-1,
2 and 3 satellites launched by Taiwan are meant
for scientific research relating to the
atmosphere, land and oceans, which she said is a
mission aimed at enhancing the well-being of
mankind and improving the natural
environment. October 8, 2005 extracted from

China gives close-up view of astronauts By Joe
Mcdonald, Associated Press BEIJING State
television showed the two Chinese astronauts
aboard the Shenzhou 6 capsule at work and play
Friday, giving an unusually intimate view into
the secretive space program on their
record-setting second day in orbit. Communist
leaders hope the manned space program's triumphs
will stir patriotic pride, shoring up their
standing amid public anger at corruption and a
growing gap between rich and poor. The Shenzhou
or Divine Vessel capsule is based on Russia's
workhorse Soyuz, though with extensive
modifications. China also bought technology for
space suits, life-support systems and other
equipment from Moscow, though officials say all
the items launched into space are made in China.

A big step forwardZhao Huanxin2005-10-13
0632"Feeling good." That was the message from
the two Chinese astronauts orbiting the Earth
yesterday in a historic space mission. And a
feel-good factor swept the nation as hundreds of
millions first watched the live telecast of
Shenzhou VI blasting off from a remote satellite
launch centre in Northwest China at 9 am and then
clips repeated on domestic and international
television channels throughout the day. China
took a big step forward towards achieving its
ambitious space programme, which eventually
includes a space station and lunar exploration,
with the first-ever launch of a two-man space
mission. October 8, 2005 extracted from China
