Japanese Aggression in Asia
  • In 1930 Japanese Prime Minister Yuko Hamaguchi
    was shot.
  • Political disorder followed
  • In two years militarists controlled govt.

Attack on Manchuria
  • An explosion on a Japanese owned railroad in the
    city of Mukden, Manchuria was blamed on the
    Chinese.
  • Within months the Japanese had taken control of
    all Manchuria.
  • China appealed to the League of Nations for help.
  • 1932 Japan declares Manchuria an independent
    nation.

Nanjing Massacre (Rape of Nanking)
  • Between December 1937 and March 1938 at least
    369,366 Chinese civilians and prisoners of war
    were slaughtered by the invading troops. An
    estimated 80,000 women and girls were raped many
    of them were then mutilated or murdered.

  • To this day the Japanese government has refused
    to apologize for these and other World War II
    atrocities, and a significant sector of Japanese
    society denies that they took place at all.

Italys Conquest of Ethiopia
  • Mussolini wanted to improve the nations economy
    by increasing taxes, reduce govt spending and
    over sea's expansion.
  • A clash on Italian Somaliland and Ethiopian
    border gave an excuse for Italy to invade.
