3
RESEARCH QUESTION
  • Will an intervention of regular Physical Exercise
and Diet in 70 obese and overweight subjects
30-60 years of age for a period of 3 months
result in decrease in BMI and WAIST-HIP RATIO by
    5?

4
DEFINITION OF OBESITY
  • Obesity is a complex, multifactorial disease that
develops from the interaction between genotype
and the environment. Our understanding of how and
why obesity occurs is incomplete however, it
involves the integration of social, behavioral,
    cultural, physiological, metabolic, and genetic
    factors.

5
Magnitude of Obesity Problem
  • In world
  • Globally, there are more than 1 billion
    overweight adults.
  • Atleast 300 million are obese.
  • Obesity and overweight pose a major risk for
chronic disease, including type 2 diabetes, CVD,
HTN and stroke and certain forms of cancer.

6
  • In India

7
Epidemiological facts factors
  • Age 1/3 of obese Adults have been so, since
    childhood
  • Sex female affected more between 45-49 . Male
    29-35.
  • physical inactivity
  • Eating habits
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Drugs

8
Aims and objectives
  • To create awareness about obesity and its ill
    effects
  • To educate people about obesity.
  • To screen people for obesity and overweight .
  • To reduce the BMI and WAIST HIP ratio of
    selected subjects .

9
Materials Methods

  • Those having serious cardiac problems were
    excluded from study.
  • 9 males were smoker no female was smoker.

20
SUMMARY (cont.)
  • 56.3 were hypertensive.
  • Z-test for BMI in males(5.44) and in
    females(4.86) is significant.
  • Z-test for WAIST-HIP RATIO in males(0.35) and
    females(2.4) is significant.
  • T-test is significant at 0.05 for males in age
    group of 35-39 for BMI.
  • T-test is significant at 0.05 for females in age
group of 35-39 for WAIST-HIP RATIO.

CONCLUSION
  • Obesity increases risk for -
  • Non Insulin dependent Diabetes Mellitus.
  • Gall Bladder disease
  • Dyslipidaemia
  • Insulin Resistance.
  • Regular Physical Exercise and Diet Control helps
    in reducing obesity.

22
RECOMMENDATION
  • Maintain the weight within the healthy range of
    BMI(18.5-24.9 kg/m2) throughout the adulthood.
  • For overweight reduction of 5-10 of body weight
    is recommended as initial goal.
  • Prevention of obesity should begin in early
childhood as it is difficult to treat in adults.
  • Control of obesity can be achieved by following
    methods -

23
PRIMARY PREVENTION
  • DIETERY CHANGES
  • Increase the fibre content.
  • Dietery fat intake should not exceed 30
    of total energy intake.
  • INCREASED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
  • decreases blood pressure and body weight.
  • increases HDL level in blood
  • PSYCOTHERAPY Motivation for weight reduction
must be cultivated in patients mind

24
SECONDARY PREVENTION
  • DRUGS Appetite suppressing drugs have been
    tried like Fenfluramine(60mg) Phenteramine(30mg)
  • SURGICAL TREATMENT
  • Gastric Bypass
  • Gastroplasty
  • Jaw-wiring
  • Liposuction.
  • These measures may be tried in advanced cases in
which diet control and physical exercise are not
    effective.

25
LIMITATIONS
  • BMI doesn't differentiate between weight due to
muscle mass and that due to fat.
  • WAIST-HIP RATIO.
