Title: Kinetica Redevelopment Project

1
Kinetica Redevelopment Project
  • Report to Kinetica Annual Users Meeting
  • 13 August 2004

2
In December 2004 ...
  • We will replace both KineticaWeb Search and the
Information Australia pilot interface with a new
    Kinetica search system
  • We will replace Kinetica Z39.50 with a new
Kinetica Z39.50 service that will benefit both
    cataloguers and search users

3
In December 2005 ...
  • We will replace both Kinetica Cataloguing and
Kinetica CJK with a new Kinetica Cataloguing
    system
  • We will not be making any major changes to
Kinetica Document Delivery in the medium term
    future

4
Our goals
  • Ensure functional, reliable, low risk solution to
    support Kinetica Cataloguing
  • Achieve improved value for money
  • Allow us to innovate, especially in the access
    services
  • Create a more modular system architecture for
Kinetica, reducing risk for the future

5
Our project approach
  • Obtain the new Kinetica Cataloguing system from
    the marketplace
  • Develop new Kinetica search and Z39.50 systems
    using TeraText
  • Separate the user administration functions
  • create a new Customer Management System

6
Stage 1
  • Acquire the new Kinetica Cataloguing system from
    the marketplace and install it
  • Develop and implement the initial releases of
  • the new Kinetica search system
  • the new Kinetica Z39.50 system
  • the Customer Management System
  • Acquire and install infrastructure
  • Completion date 31 December 2004

7
Stage 2
  • Complete implementation of the new Kinetica
    Cataloguing system
  • and decommission the current legacy systems
  • Develop additional functionality for
  • the Kinetica search system
  • the Customer Management System
  • Completion date 31 December 2005

8
Project methodology
  • Using the Librarys Project Management
    Methodology (based on PRINCE2)
  • Using independent consultant with IT project
    expertise
  • initial risk assessment
  • initial project plan
  • ongoing Quality Assurance
  • Five sub-project teams

9
Implications (1)
  • The National Librarys IT Division will support
all Kinetica components from January 2006
  • Currently supports only KDD, BatchLink,
    MARCLink
  • New Kinetica search service will use same system
platform as other NLA discovery services

10
Implications (2)
  • Improved value for money
  • by bringing support in-house
  • by combining the systems supporting Kinetica
    Cataloguing and Kinetica CJK
  • Cost of redevelopment will be recovered over life
    of new systems

11
Where are we up to?
  • Kinetica Cataloguing system
  • In advanced stage of procurement
  • Announcement of solution expected by October 2004
  • Other systems
  • Stage 1 specifications completed
  • Coding well advanced for Stage 1 release
  • Infrastructure
  • Servers and storage procured for Stage 1

12
Kinetica Cataloguing System
  • Will support intake, creation and editing of
    bibliographic, authority and holdings data
  • Becomes the new Update" database
  • Contribution of data via BatchLink and online
  • Will replace existing cataloguing client and
    KineticaWeb-Update
  • Export data to the Kinetica search system

13
Procurement Process
  • Request for Tender issued on 2 March, tenders
    closed on 6 April
  • Tender document available at http//www.nla.gov.a
    u/kinetica/redevdoc.html
  • Selection process is well advanced and on
    schedule
  • Selection will be based on best value for money

14
Expected benefits
  • Integration of Kinetica CJK into Kinetica
    Cataloguing
  • Maintenance of high quality NBD
  • Robust performance
  • Assured support and continuing development
  • Minimal change for libraries that contribute via
    BatchLink

15
Data migration
  • Data will be migrated from current systems
  • First test data load to the new search system is
    complete
  • low error rates were encountered
  • Migration process has already allowed us to
identify and correct some data problems

16
Kinetica Z39.50 service (1)
  • Will support
  • Bath profile (to Level 2)
  • all Z39.50 services including scan, sort, delete,
    explain
  • wide range of record syntaxes
  • Minimal configuration changes required for
    Kinetica users

17
Kinetica Z39.50 service (2)
  • Z39.50 Gateway (in Stage 1)
  • allows your own Z39.50 clients to access all
    Kinetica targets
  • supports both cataloguing and information
    searching
  • the records can be copied directly to your local
    system
  • logs your transactions with these targets

18
Customer Management System (1)
  • Will maintain information needed to
  • authenticate users and authorise access
  • generate billing, usage and content reports
  • Customer Directory Module
  • is an LDAP directory
  • in Stage 1, your account information will be
    maintained as currently
  • in Stage 2, it will be maintained by you

19
Customer Management System (2)
  • Access Management Module
  • provides authentication and authorisation
services for all new Kinetica user interfaces
  • includes IP authentication (in Stage 1)

20
Infrastructure
  • Kinetica infrastructure will be integrated into
    the Librarys IT infrastructure
  • Servers and storage infrastructure have been
    selected
  • We aim to maintain or increase availability and
    other service levels

21
In summary
  • We are building a new Kinetica system which will
  • be more modular
  • offer better value for money
  • be easier to innovate
  • provide functional improvements for you
