What is abrasive paper?

• Sometimes called sand-paper or glass-paper.
  (However the correct name is
  ABRASIVE-PAPER).

Types of Abrasive paper.

• Wet or Dry?
• Aluminium Oxide?
• Emery Cloth?

Wet or Dry?

• As the name suggests it may be used wet or dry.
• The liquid used to wet the paper is generally oil
  or water.
• Wet or Dry abrasive paper is generally black or
  dark brown in colour.

Who uses Wet or Dry?

• The automotive industry.
• Jewellers.
• Artists.
• Fine furniture makers for sanding of clear coats.

Why would you want to wet abrasive paper?

• To cause airborne carcinogenic particles or
  otherwise hazardous materials to be trapped in a
  solution rather than in the air.
• To lubricate the surface to make sanding easier.
• To stop the abrasive paper from clogging.

Aluminium Oxide?

• Aluminium oxide abrasive paper may only be used
  dry.
• They come in all different sizes and colours.

Who uses Aluminium Oxide Abrasive paper.

• Automotive industry.
• Woodworkers.
• Machinists.
• Painters.
• Artists.
• In fact it is the most widely used abrasive paper.

Emery Cloth?

• In its basic form it is simply cloth with emery
  particles glued to it.
• It usually comes in rolls and is either black or
  red in colour.

Who uses Emery Cloth?

• Mechanics.
• Machinists.
• In general anyone involved in the metal
  fabrication industry.

What do these different types of Abrasive paper
share in common apart from the fact that they all
remove material?

• They all use a standardised grading system.

How are they graded?

• By the amount of abrasive particles per 25mm by
  25mm square.
