Project Outcomes
  • The research and production of a 'specialist'
British Sign Language glossary to support
undergraduate science and engineering study. This
glossary will be developed to cover terminology
    in
  • physical sciences
  • biological sciences
  • environmental science
  • engineering
  • built environment.

5
Project Outcomes
  • Workshops and research leading to the
identification and definition of key terms used
in level zero and level one undergraduate study.
  • Sector wide staff development events on
language, teaching and assessing Deaf students
    for science and engineering academics.
  • Updating Artsigns to add more signs and terms as
identified by glossary users, interpreters and
    academics.

6
How will we achieve this?
7
How will we achieve this?
  • Identifying Deaf art, science and engineering
    practitioners and experienced HE subject
    interpreters.
  • Getting terms and definitions from a variety of
    HE institutions.
  • Collecting signs from different regions of the UK.

8
How will we achieve this?
  • Presenting the collected signs to a panel of
    critical friends for evaluation.
  • Presenting the glossary online for maximum ease
    of use.

9
Why we need this project
  • National shortage of Sign Language interpreters,
very few with science and engineering expertise.
  • Access to, often, complex concepts and highly
specialised terminology makes it difficult for
Deaf students to study in HE.

10
Why we need this project
  • Very little BSL reference material available in
    Science and Engineering.
  • The need to continuously improve HOW we teach all
our students, not least in light of recent
    legislation(SENDA) and Government directives (The
    White Paper).
