7
Factors in their degree students identified as
helping them prepare for graduate employment
  • Work-based/ work-related opportunities
  • Career Management skills
  • Employer engagement / Guest speakers
  • Transferable / employability skills
  • My placement year was definitely the most
valuable experience of my course so far. I think
that only through placement can you get a good
idea of employment after college, it cant really
    be taught (Art Design Student)
  • Practical seminars encouraged me to speak
out and voice my opinions which is something that
I am aware that employers are looking for
    (Psychology student)
  • The career modules in which we got to
research career opportunities and had people from
different companies and organisations come in and
give us advice and guidance (Accounting student)

8
Exemplars of good practice
  • 1st year students introduced to interpersonal
social skills using video recordings and
role-plays to develop communication skills (BSc
    Communication)
  • Series of 12 two hour seminars where BMS
    professionals present good practice for
    Biomedical students (Biomedical Sciences)
  • Students share a common studio space and engage
in cross course activities to encourage cross
    disciplinary thinking. (MA Multidisciplinary
design, MDes Textile material Product, MA Art in
    Public)
  • 3rd year students engage in multi disciplinary
industry based team projects (BSc Hons Mechanical
    Engineering, Engineering Management, Engineering)
  • Open box module in 3rd year (BMus BDes)

9
Action Plans
  • Last years pilots
  • Promotional DVD of past graduates
    (Communication)
  • longitudinal survey past graduates
    (Environmental Sciences)
  • Incubation unit for students progressing from
    study to work (Creative Arts)
  • Creativity Hub in the Studio Environment (Art
    Design)
  • Incorporating Employability into the Curriculum'
  • Establish employer liaison group, visiting
    speakers, road show (Biosciences)
  • Student Multimedia CVs (CIS)
  • Current pilots
  • Engaging employers and alumni within programmes
  • Employer liaison / advisory groups
  • Creation of studying law DVD
  • Careers teachers information events
  • Help students marketing of transferable skills
  • Creation of online employer resource

10
Staff perceptions about the EDORT process
  • This is a useful reflective exercise in helping
to think about what the students have said and
what would like to do. (Business, Finance
    Investment)
  • Helps focus on student needs/expectation and
also that of academic staff. (Law)
  • The review was useful in helping me to see the
enormous breadth of activities that our School
was involved with as an indirect consequence, I
was then able to use the information for other
    University evaluation procedures such as
    revalidation and ASM. (Environmental Sciences)
  • Helps provide some focus and a mechanism to
encourage staff to consider development of
    programme(s). (Engineering)
  • Writing an action plan is the easy part, putting
it into practice is the challenge given the
additional demands on staff and resources (Sports
    Studies)

11
Key recommendations for the EDORT process
  • Engage in exercise once every two years
  • Map process into revalidation
  • Include graduate responses in student
    evaluation
  • Add to School TL Committee or Course
    Committee agendas
  • Action plan helpful and resources need to be
    committed to take it forward

12
Conclusions
  • EDORT a tool for reviewing structures in place
    to support employability
  • Valuable tool for reviewing programmes and
    curriculum development
  • Celebrates and showcases good practice
  • Encourages future development in employability
    via action plans
  • Student voice
  • EDORT toolkit, summary report and action plans
