James Design Process
Design and development consists of a number of
sub-processes that all have their own structure.
Each sub-process can pretty much feed into any
of the other sub-processes. These are all
embedded in the designers and clients
respective situations.
Resources- Useful capabilities with no explicit
current application
Constraints - Hard fast limits- Develop,
address, resolve
Problems / Challenges- Constraint issues with
no immediate resolution
Investigation - This lays out preliminary
starting pointfor other sub-processes -
Preliminarily establish / identify / scope-
situational constraints- goals/directions/desires
- existing potential resources- unresovled
issues / problems
Learning Problem(s)- Define refine
Immersion- Immerse self in subject/problem
Users- interviews- user testing- assessment
Goals / Objectives / Directions / Desires- these
ultimately drive everything
Planning (ADDIE) - Develop schedule-
Assessment - Preliminary reqts (shopping
list) - Func reqts spec- Investigate-
Design- Develop- Integrate- Test / refine /
QA- Evalueate
Specification
Customer- interviews- user testing- assessment
Design
Production-this is very complex (LDT-wise)!
Sketching / Prototyping / Styling- Preliminary
solutions ideas- Scenario testing /
specification- Templating- Prototyping-
Storyboarding (preliminary?) (white boarding?)-
Develop look feel / styling- Tool creation for
design/development
Integration
process-actively operates on problem other
parts
Testing / Refinement / QA
Evaluation
holding tank-body of relatively non-active
knowledge
Reflection- Looking at bigger picture how
pieces impact each other
