Title: CORES

1
CORES
  • Project Update

2
CORES Context
  • CORES is an Accompanying Measure under the
    Semantic Web action line (2001-2002)
  • It aims to serve the Community of metadata
    implementors, by both
  • aiming to enhance interoperability between
    metadata solutions
  • providing registration of metadata schemas

3
CORES partners
  • PricewaterhouseCoopers, Luxembourg (coordinator)
  • Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, Germany
  • UKOLN, University of Bath, UK
  • MTA SZTAKI, Hungary

4
Activities
  • Standards Interoperability Forum
  • Perspective standards developers could try to
define standards and semantics in comparable ways
so that implementers can understand, interpret
and apply (combinations of) standards in their
    applications and systems
  • CORES Registry
  • Building on the work of SCHEMAS, which examined
how implementers typically mix and match
multiple standards in their local vocabularies
and defined a model for declaring such usage in
    Resource Description Framework (RDF) for
    harvesting by registries

5
Goal of Forum
  • Bring together key people from metadata standards
initiatives to discuss issues of cross-standard
    interoperability
  • Discuss feasibility of building bridges between
    metadata standards
  • Explore potential for building a platform for
    future co-ordination and co-operation
  • Feed results into W3C Semantic Web activity and
    other relevant international platforms

6
Forum participants
  • Standards
  • CERIF (EuroCRIS)
  • Dublin Core (DCMI)
  • DOI (IDF)
  • IEEE/LOM (IEEE LTSC)
  • GILS (USGS)
  • ONIX (EDItEUR)
  • MPEG (no signature yet)
  • Other organizations
  • SWAD Europe
  • OASIS

Forum meeting took place at CEN premises,
Brussels, 18 November 2002

CORES Resolution
  • Whereas
  • our metadata standards have elements units of
meaning comparable and mappable to elements of
    other standards
  • We agree
  • To assign Uniform Resource Identifiers to our
    elements.
  • To articulate and publish specific policies
    regarding the stability, persistence, and
maintenance of the URIs assigned to the elements.

8
Actions on participants
  • Finalise and approve the consensus statement by
e-mail before end 2002, involving participants
    who could not attend
  • Publicise consensus statement to wider audience
    of metadata standards initiatives
  • Define and publish URI assignment mechanisms in
    the next half year
  • Assign URIs to elements in next half year
  • Define and publish URI persistence policies in
    next half year

9
CORES next steps
  • Schema Creation and Registration Workshop,
    Budapest, 6/7 March
  • Publication of results of CORES project (e.g.
    submitted poster for WWW2003)
  • Development of 6th Framework Programme proposal
  • Research and coordination issues identified in
    Interoperability Survey and Forum meeting
  • Further work in the area of schema registration
    and management
