Title: Frogs Conservation

1
  • Frogs Conservation

2
Frog conservation
  • With over 210 frog species and new species still
being discovered, Australia is classed as a
    significant centre of amphibian diversity.
However, frogs are declining due to
  • Habitat destruction/degradation
  • Water quality
  • Pollution
  • Sedimentation
  • Stream erosion
  • Ultraviolet B radiation
  • Introduced species
  • Disease
  • Climate change/global warming

3
Classification of conservation status
  • Conservation status categories relating to
    Australian frogs include
  • Extinct (3 species in Australia)
  • Critically endangered (15 species)
  • Endangered
  • (18 species including the Growling Grass Frog)
  • Vulnerable (11 species)
  • Near threatened (8 species)
  • Data deficient

4
How can we conserve frog species?
  • Create frog habitat
  • Build a frog pond
  • Manage frog habitats by not altering water
    patterns, maintaining native vegetation,
    excluding grazing by livestock, controlling
pollution and invasive plant and animal species
  • Reduce greenhouse gas and ozone emissions
  • Prevent the spread of disease by not relocating
frogs, tadpoles and plants from one area to
    another

Ecolincs stormwater wetland was created to
naturally filter stormwater and to create habitat
for frogs and other aquatic species.
In 2007, a Growling Grass Frog was located in
the Ecolinc wetland and recorded on the DSE
database.
