2Course Objectives
1. To present, study, and implement a modern
structured design methodology that allows
engineers to formulate a design problem in
such fashion that
(a) The problem has a unique solution that is
best with respect to specified
criteria and the quality of the
solution can be clearly described.
(b) The engineer understands each task to be
accomplished in arriving at the
solution.
3Course Objectives (Cont)
(c) Design formulation and solution tasks can
be systematically scheduled to allow
for culmination of the process on a
timely basis.
(d) The engineer can evaluate at all times how
close he/she is to the best
solution. That is, How good is the
current iterate?
(e) The engineer can prepare a design review
presentation with documentation that
will sell the product to upper
management.
4Course Objectives (Cont)
2. To teach methodology and techniques that are
currently used in design endeavors
throughout many industries and which have
seen extensive use in the aerospace industry.
3. To give students sufficient experience to
understand and apply the design process.
4. To allow the student to build confidence in
his/her ability to participate and produce
in a large-scale design effort to be
undertaken in Aer E 462.
5. To expand the students ability to use modern
engineering workstations in simulating
engineering systems.
5Course Class Structure
Class Structure Lecture Sessions
- Instructor/Group discussions
Laboratory - Small group design exercises
All Work Must Be Submitted On Time

7 Scientists Engineers
Scientist - A person primarily interested in
increasing his/her knowledge of
nature. Physical phenomena
associated with our universe are
studied by scientists in an attempt to
formulate fundamental laws that can be
used by other technical people,
especially engineers.
Engineer - A person interested in using the
fundamental laws of nature to
research and develop new
physical systems for the benefit of mankind.
