Roles and Responsibilities of PFA committee
members.
  • Committee structure
  • The key elements of the structure of the PFA are
    the
  • Constitution (governing document)
  • Members
  • Committee
  • Trustees

5
Constitution
  • All PFAs need a constitution. This is a document
which establishes the fundamental rules by which
the PFA is governed and describes
  • the aims of the PFA and its powers
  • its membership
  • the size of the committee and how members are
    elected
  • the need for an annual audit and general meeting

6
Members
  • Depending on the type of association you are,
members will include some or all of the
    following
  • parents
  • headteacher
  • teaching and non-teaching staff
  • people from the local community
  • grandparents
  • carers/guardians
  • It is important that the definition of
membership is clear in your constitution.
Members are not legally responsible for the
actions of the PFA but they do elect the
committee who manage the PFA and who are legally
    responsible.

7
Committee
  • The committee is a team of volunteers who are
elected at the PFAs Annual General Meeting (AGM)
to manage the PFA on behalf of the members.
  • There are two types of committee member Officers
and Ordinary (or Other) Committee Members.
Officers have specific roles such as Chair,
    Treasurer or Secretary.  Ordinary Committee
Members work alongside the Officers and play a
    vital role.
  • All committee members have equal voting rights,
except for the chair of a committee meeting who
    has a casting vote.

8
Trustees
  • As we are registering as a charity all the
committee members (Officers and Ordinary) are
Trustees of the PFA (charity) and have a legal
duty to ensure that the charity acts lawfully and
    is managed properly.

9
Charity Status
  • Benefits include
  • exemption from the payment of income and
    corporation tax

    charitable trusts

  • registering as a charity gives the clear message
that your PFA is working for the benefit of
    others
  • establishes a clear set of rules by which your
    PFA operates
