Scientific Notation
By Amy and Tequara
2
  • The first thing to learn is how to convert
numbers back and forth between scientific
notation and ordinary decimal notation. The
expression "10n", where n is a whole number,
simply means "10 raised to the nth power," or in
other words, a number gotten by using 10 as a
    factor n times. For example

3
To reverse Scientific Notation, you start with an
equation such as 1.05 x 109. You start at the
decimal point and move it to the right 9
times.
1.05000000

Now you have 105,000,000.
4
Here is a few more examples of different types of
scientific notation
5
Negatives make the decimal go to the left
  • 1.06 x 10-2
  • So you would take the decimal and move it 2
places to the left. That gives you .0106

6
Now you try
  • 1.09 x 105
  • 1.5 x 10-9
  • 1.03 x 108

109,000
.0000000015
103,000,000
