2004-2005
- to support the implementation of the national
policy concept of coral reef management in
Indonesia by NGO, IGO and local people in the
form of community based management
3INDONESIAN ACTIVITIES IN 2004-2005.
- Implementation Phase (before axelleration) in
COREMAP Ph.1 and starting from the beginning for
the new locations (Initiation Phase) for COREMAP
new Loc. Ph 2.
4Coordination and Training.
- diving and LIT research methodology on the coral
reef ecosystem in Padang and tanjung Pinang, each
3 districts. - Up till now LIPI has trained 550 people, coming
from all parts of Indonesia. - In North Sulawesi province, the university had
conducted diving training course last year and
will held LIT coral reef research method this
year.
5Coordination and Training.
- An NGO conducted some training courses for junior
and senior high school teachers in Pramuka island
to introduce coastal ecosystem, conservation and
snorkelling. In the meantime it also conducted a
training for conservation staff the skills for
long term coral reef monitoring (data collection,
sampling and data analysis).
6Coral Reef Research and Monitoring.
- Ecological Baseline studies were conducted at
(west and north Sumatera province) (East part of
Sumatera), each 3 distritcs
7Coral Reef Research and Monitoring.
- Third decade coral reef monitoring in Seribu
island, Jakarta Bay in September 2005. This
activity also represented a joint expedition
between Dutch and Indonesia
8Coral Reef Research and Monitoring.
- Make an artificial reef at Lahe island,
Gorontalo, North Sulawesi using concrete block
in 10 m depth
9Coral Reef Research and Monitoring.
- joint research and monitoring on coral reef with,
such as long term monitoring at Spermonde
Islands, biology and ecology of some commercial
coral species, experimental study on coral
bleaching, eutrophication in coral reef area,
also general coral reef assessment in south and
south east Sulawesi, (Jompa, personal
communication)

- In East Kalimantan, some NGOs assist some
activities local participatory on turtle
monitoring, sea weed farming, community based eco
tourism.
11Coral Reef Research and Monitoring.
- Indonesia has studied ecological and social
baseline and established monitoring program for
the Tsunami impact in Aceh.
12Coral Reef Research and Monitoring.
- All of the research data were stored in database
system and Indonesia has established Data and
Information System (www.coremap.or.id)
13District Fisheries Monitoring.
- Socio-Economic Data have been collected, analyzed
and disseminated. It was done in Mentawai,
Tapanuli Tengah also in Natuna, Batam and Riau
Archipelago.
14District Fisheries Monitoring.
- Support for Local Research. Workshops under the
theme of Regional Research Agenda were
conducted in Riau Archipelago(August, 2004),
Nias, Tapanuli Tengah (August,2004) and Natuna
(September,2004). Some follow up actions
resulting from the workshops are now running.
15District Marine Management Area (MMA)
- Also three marine protected areas have been
established in Gili Sulat, Gili Lawang and Gili
Petagan. consist of coral reef, mangrove and sea
grass. Were established in 2001, give a positive
impacts, as evidenced by increased catch of
commercial fishes.
16District Marine Management Area (MMA)
- Other local marine protected and conservation
areas are currently found in the following
regions
- North Sulawesi
- Local marine conservation area at Minahasa
district.
17District Marine Management Area (MMA)
- Marine conservation area, established through
Governors decree and is managed by the local
government in collaboration with NGO (Ismunarty,
personal communication).
18Public awareness and Education
- Awareness campaign was conducted through a range
of media including musical events, high school
quiz contest (in Jakarta only), displays,
brochures, radio and photo video (Workshop on
Digital Media Development)..
19Public awareness and Education
- Education program has developed, produced and
socialized coral reef education materials for
Inclusion into the formal primary and secondary
education curriculum in each program district
20Public awareness and Education
- National reef education events for children and
youth was held in September 2004. Some students
from the district of COREMAP II were encouraged
to participate in the national educational
activities, which would give them exposure to
what was going on at national level.
