Title: The Ethanol Bus Buyers Consortium

1
The Ethanol Bus Buyers Consortium
  • For fossil fuel free public transport

2
The Ethanol Bus Buyers Consortium
  • Members of the consortium are
  • Stockholm County Council
  • The BioAlcohol Fuel Foundation (BAFF)
  • Stockholm Public Transport Authority (SL)
  • Svensk Etanolkemi AB (SEKAB)
  • The City of Stockholm.

3
The objective, goal and scope
  • The objective of the Ethanol Bus Buyers
Consortium is to achieve a well functioning
market for ethanol buses in Europe.
  • The goals is to get more suppliers of ethanol
    buses on the international market.
  • The scope is to
  • Gather a sufficient mass of interested buyers.
  • Identify the opportunities for public transport.
  • Initiate a tender and contracting process.

4
Two steps
  • Demonstration
  • Test with a limited number of buses during 1-2
    years.
  • Common procurement
  • Letter of intent - altogether more than 1000
    buses.
  • Start a tender process.

5
Demonstrating cities
  • Within the BEST project
  • Madrid
  • La Spezia
  • Rotterdam
  • Stockholm
  • Bio Fuel Region (Sweden)
  • Sao Paolo
  • Nanyang
  • Other cities

6
The ethanol buses
  • The ethanol buses are standard Scania Omni buses
    with a 9 litres Scania diesel compression-ignition
engine, slightly modified to operate on
    bioethanol bus fuel (E95).

7
The fuel
  • The ethanol fuel is developed for heavy-duty,
    ethanol compression-ignition engines.
  • It fulfils the ethanol fuel standard given by
    Scania.
  • Originates from renewable sources only.
  • The fuel is produced and delivered by SEKAB
    located in Sweden.

8
Refuelling bioethanol
  • The bus driver will not observe any considerable
differences. Refuelling ethanol is not different
    from refuelling diesel.
  • For safety reason the fuel tank installation must
be a dedicated tank for ethanol use.
  • The fuel tank can be rented, leased or purchased
from a number of companies that manufacture such
    installations.

Global and local emissions
  • The efficient solution for both global and local
    emissions.
  • No global emissions.
  • Local emissions are lower than EURO 5 if using
    todays technology.

13
The first ethanol bus in Sweden
  • Operated 15 years (1985-1990).
  • More than 1 million kilometres on ethanol fuel.

14
First fleet tests outside Sweden
15
History of ethanol buses
  • Methanol was the first alcohol fuel for
    heavy-duty engines.
  • Mid of 1970s, first test with Volvo.
  • 1985, the first two Scania ethanol buses began to
    operate in Örnsköldsvik.
  • 1990-1994 Stockholm Transport run a project on 32
    ethanol buses.
  • 1996 there was 160 ethanol buses in Sweden.
  • 2004 more than 400 ethanol buses.
  • During 2006 the number will increase to about
530, whereof 380 buses in City of Stockholm.

16
Heading for ethanol buses - Yes
  • it is easy to introduce and test ethanol buses.
The public transport in your city can be powered
    by bioethanol.
  • ethanol buses are green. Large reduction of
    fossil carbon dioxide emission.
  • ethanol buses are clean. The local emissions of
nitrogen oxides and particulates are dramatically
    reduced.
  • ethanol buses are available now. The buses can
be ordered directly from Scania Bus in Stockholm.
  • there is a long experience of operating ethanol
buses. The first ethanol buses started to operate
    1985.

17
Welcome to join an ethanol bus fleet test, it is
easy
  • Your own experiences are much more worth than
reading a report or looking at a presentation.
  • You get experience and understanding of the fuel,
    infrastructure, the ethanol engine, driving,
    maintenance, and passenger attitudes.
  • Welcome to join the other cities in Europe and
start up an ethanol bus fleet test project in
    your city.
  • The Ethanol Bus Buyers Consortium will support
you for a successful demonstration test of
    ethanol buses.
