Title: Copper Labs

1
Copper Labs
  • 5 labs, several days, 100 pts.

2
Lab 1 Copper to Copper Nitrate
  • Clean wire with steel wool
  • Mass copper wire 1-2 grams

3
  • Tare mass beaker
  • Coil wire and place in bottom of beaker
  • Add 20 mL Nitric AcidGOGGLE UP!

4
  • Cover with watchglass, protect your lungs
  • Transfer to hotplate in the hood
  • Remove watchglass

5
Data to get
  • 1. Mass of copper wire . g
  • 5. Mass of 100 mL beaker . g
  • Dont worry about other calculations today.
  • Make observations-print qualitative sheet form
internet and/or import photos and print final copy

6
Lab 2 Copper Nitrate to Copper Hydroxide
  • 6. Mass dry beaker and copper nitrate (lab 1)

7
  • Add 20 mL of NaOH, use a stirring rod!
  • Let the precipitate settle

8
  • 3.Mass a piece of filter paper and fold (lab 2)
  • Place into funnel and wet with wash bottle

9
  • Filter solution
  • Use wash bottle to remove as much as possible

10
  • Make sure filtrate is clear!

11
  • Place filter, funnel and flask on cart

12
Lab 2 Data
  • Only data needed today is mass of filter paper!
  • Transfer mass of 100 mL beaker over to 2
  • Once you have calculated moles of copper wire
from lab 1 3 you will transfer it over to 1
  • Continue with observation sheet

13
Lab 2 Second Day
  • Pull up filter paper and transfer to pre-massed
    beaker.
  • Put on cart to dry fully

14
Lab 3 Copper Hydroxide to Copper Oxide
  • 5. Mass dry copper hydroxide, beaker and filter
    paper (lab 2)

15
  • Transfer from filter paper
  • Wash off as much as possible

16
  • Boil until all is black
  • Let cool settle

17
Decant, decant, decant
18
Transfer to tare beaker
  • Use wash bottle to
  • transfer, decant

19
Decant all excess water.
  • Deliver to specified area

20
Data
  • Transfer mass of 100 mL beaker to lab 3
  • Transfer moles of copper to lab 3

21
Lab 4 CuO to CuCl2
  • 3. Mass of CuO and beaker (Lab 3)

22
Setup Lab 4
  • Using 50 mL beaker GOGGLES, measure 20 mL of
    HCl
  • Pour over CuO, stir until color changes
  • Put in fume hood

23
Lab 5 The Return
  • 3. Mass dry CuCl2
  • Add 40 mL of distilled water to beaker. Stir.
  • Zinc Me!
  • Stir, stir, stir!

24
Stir some more!
  • Continue to stir to allow the atoms to react with
    the zinc.
  • You might need more zinc to banish the green
color (too much is not good).
  • POINT OF NO RETURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Add 20 mL H2SO4 GOGGLES!

25
Let extra zinc react with acid
  • Decant excess liquid
  • Wash with distilled water 3x so it doesnt look
    green when dried
  • Transfer to pre-massed evaporating dish
  • Set up steam bath
  • Dry, pencil poker test

26
Last step!
  • Mass dry copper evaporating dish
  • Clean out dish return
  • Calculate
  • Evaluate
  • Conclude
  • Produce great lab reports!
