Title: Making a Battery

1
Lesson 2
  • Making a Battery

2
Objectives
  • Build a battery
  • Observe what happens when a battery operates
  • Describe what makes up a battery

3
(No Transcript)
4
Background
  • Energy is the ability to do work.
  • In this lab, you will see evidence of energy
    through a light bulb.
  • Remember, energy comes in many forms and it can
be transformed from one to another.

5
How Batteries Work
  • Negative terminal (electrode) made of metal
such as zinc to accumulate electrons
  • Positive terminal (electrode) made of metal
such as copper to lose electrons
  • Electrolyte solution or paste that separates
into ions (positive and negative atoms)

6
Dry Cell Battery
7
The Reaction
  • A chemical process (oxidation-reduction) causes
one electrode to give electrons to the other
    electrode.
  • The movement of electrons produces electric
    potential energy.
  • The amount of electric energy is measured in
    volts.

8
Task
  • Follow the procedures beginning on page 14 of
    your lab manual.
  • Record your observations on a sheet of paper.
  • On the same paper, answer the reflection
questions (complete sentences) on page 15.
  • Draw and label your battery.

9
Question
  • What is a battery?

10
Hypothesis
  • A battery is a device that stores chemical energy.

11
Materials
  • Copper, zinc, copper sulfate solution, light
    bulb, blotter paper

12
Procedure
  • See pages 14-15 in the lab manual.

13
Analysis
  • See student observation sheet.

14
Conclusion
  • (write a brief description explaining how your
battery created electrical energy and transformed
    it into light)

15
New Questions
  • What types of materials will produce the greatest
    electrical energy?

16
Reading
  • Batteries Electricity To Go

Alessandro Volta
Sir Humphry Davy
17
Comparison
  • Wet-Cell and Dry-Cell Batteries
