  • Undertaking non-users research and effective
    community engagement
  • Over-lapping data from a number of secondary
    sources
  • Qualitative research and presentation of the
    findings

9
Undertaking non-user research and effective
community engagement
  • What does this mean?
  • Requires a clear understanding of who the
non-users are and where to reach them?
  • Requires direct contact
  • Covers a sufficient sample size
  • Allows sufficient time for responses
  • Some tools to use
  • Questionnaires to target groups, verbal surveys
of potential customers in public areas, at
    community events, attending non-user meetings,
    influencing corporate/ household surveys

10
Undertaking non-user research and effective
community engagement
  • Examples of best practice
  • London Borough of Lambeth have used Twitter to
gain players for the London Youth Games
  • St Albans development of focus groups with
people engaged, about to engage or non-users. The
team have also used free health checks to
    undertake consultation with non-users
  • Facebook
  • Customer survey pop-ups on the Local Authority
    site
  • Newspaper articles

11
Overlapping data from secondary sources
  • What does this mean?
  • It is important to have an understanding of the
existing information that is already available
for you to use. Overlapping data is ideal as it
enables you to gain a clear understanding of the
issues in key pockets of the communities that
    you serve
  • Tools to use
  • Census data, research and strategies carried out
by other Departments, YST, PCTs, National
    Governing Bodies of Sport, Colleges/
    Universities, the Police (Safer Neighbourhood
    teams), local area agreements

12
Overlapping data from secondary sources
  • Examples of best practice
  • Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust making
effective use of partner data on youth nuisance
statistics to plan where to prioritise outreach
work and to monitor if projects are making an
    impact
  • Kent Football Association Local Area data
    mapping tool
  • Bury Sports Development Team using GIS mapping to
    overlay data sets

Qualitative research and presentation of the
findings
  • What does this mean?
  • Quest Assessors have found that a large majority
of data presented is quantity based. Qualitative
data allows for a review of the softer outcomes
  • Some tools to use
  • On-line questionnaires
  • Video diaries
  • DVDs
  • Photos
  • Artwork from the event
  • Individual case studies with quotes

15
Qualitative research and presentation of the
findings
  • Belfast Sports Development Team collated
qualitative feedback from participants on their
    Teenage Kicks Programme. The personal
testimonials were collated into a brochure
highlighting how the participants self confidence
and perception of their body image had improved
  • Group de-brief meetings with Coaches to identify
key issues and qualitative feedback, hosted by
the Isle of Man Sports Development Team after all
    holiday sessions
  • The Milton Keynes Sports Development Team
produced a Gymnastics case study which
highlighted the success of a local initiative,
which was then recognised nationally by the NGB.
