Why undertake SHE Audits Tours?

• Auditing and inspection (Safety Tours) are
  critical elements of the STFC SHE Management
  System.
• They
• provide management feedback on implementation of
  STFC SHE Codes
• maintain the profile of SHE management and
  workplace housekeeping safety
• identify how codes can be improved, making sure
  that recommendations are acted upon.

Key features

• Establishes new requirement for a coherent STFC
  wide - two level SHE audit programme - approved
  by the STFC SHE Committee and administered by SHE
  Group
• Compliance audits - Are we following the codes
  and can they be improved?, all codes every 3
  years and
• System audit Are we doing what we should be
  doing, is system working as a whole delivering
  STFC expectations, undertaken 4 yearly.
• Formally establishes the current Safety Tour
  programmes under Departmental Directors, covering
  all areas every 2 years.

Implications

• For Safety Tours simply formalises established
  practices at Departmental level
• SHE Compliance and System Auditing are new
  activities driven by the STFC Audit and SHE
  Committees through SHE Group.
• No System audit in 2009/10.
• Compliance audit programme for 2009/10 identified
  9 SHE codes to audit, 5 undertaken by external
  specialists/Research Council Internal Audit
  Service (RCIAS) and 4 undertaken by internal
  auditors drawn from SHE Group and selected
  Departmental staff.
• Programme will be communicated in due course.
• Audits focus on a code sampling its
  implementation across Departments Are we
  following the codes can they be improved?

  those new to safety tours, and for those
  undertaking auditing a 1 day SHE auditor course
  is planned.
