Describe what it was like growing up.
  • Well I grew up in Washington DC up from
Massachusetts Avenue. Shopping was only four
blocks away and you could travel the best stores
in the world. There where special stores. Like
there was a nut store that had every kind of nut
possible. There was coffee from all over the
world where you could get your own brands mixed
and ground. There where interesting things that
you didnt appreciate when you where young.
There are museums, ball fields, baseball
stadiums, football, any kind of sports the city
has a little bit of everything. From cathedrals
to any kind of church you can imagine. We had a
Hanes point witch we went to during the
summertime in the afternoon for a picnic next to
the Potomac river. We could watch the airplanes
take off and land, witch were on the other side
of the river. George Washingtons home was down
the river a little ways and we also fished in
that river in March when the fish where running.
We had campfires on the rocks and we fished most
of the night. So there was a lot of interesting
things to do in the city witch other people dont
even know about. I went to a special high school
where I learned my trade, witch I am still using
today and I was an air raid warden doing the
first part of World War II. George Scheffel

  • My biggest accomplishment was that I started my
own business about thirty-five years ago and Im
still there in that business. Now my two sons
George and Matt are working in the shop and in
the business. We work together as a team and
were doing very well. So I would say that was a
major accomplishment. I also like to say that
Ive sang in the choir for maybe sixty-five
years. So I would say music is a big
accomplishment. Also that raising family of five
children and seeing that there all doing well is
a big accomplishment. Im still married after
    fifty-two or fifty-three years I guess, I dont
know exactly, but it doesnt matter, Im still
there. I own my own house and I dont owe anybody
    anything.-George Scheffel

What was your biggest accomplishment?

Question 3
What event in history do you remember the most?
Why?
  • In history, I would say, World War II. I still
remember being in my uncles, my grandfathers,
and my fathers house. They where all playing
cards when the news broke over the radio that
Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor. My grandfather
had a bakery and my grandmother worked in the
bakery along with my mother. She decorated cakes
and I remember her throwing every dish out the
second floor window in the back when it said
Made in Japan. I guess World War II just was a
big thing. Id later graduated from school,
joined the navy, and I guess I was in the navy
for two years at the end of World War II, but
that single event, to live through it was just a
    big thing.-George Scheffel
