Beginnings
  • VENUE Bandaranayake Memorial International
    Conference Hall, Colombo
  • 5 exam sessions am and pm on Wed 28th and Thu
    29th March am only Friday 30th March
  • Each session will accommodate 14 candidates.
    Candidates will move in a circuit through the
    OSCE stations

Format
  • Stations
  • Total of 14 stations with an additional 3-4 rest
    stations.
  • All stations will have simulated patients and
    Examiners
  • Time allocation
  • Each case will be a maximum of 10 minutes
    duration
  • Bell/whistle marks the start finish of a case
  • Up to one minute break between cases for
    change-over
  • There is time allocated for reading the case
    material prior to seeing the next case
  • Assume the examination will take up to 3 hours
    from the start time

Case content
  • Typical cases from South Asian practice
  • A clinical examination may be required
  • No intimate examination (e.g. rectal, vaginal,
    breast)
  • Candidates instruction of each case will be
    provided at each station to help identify the
    focus of the case
  • Removal of any paperwork from the examination
    will result in disqualification of the candidate

Equipment
  • All necessary equipment for examination will be
    provided at each station except for stethoscope.
  • Please bring your own stethoscope but no other
    equipment will be necessary

Electronics
  • Mobile phones will not be allowed in the
    examination hall
  • Use of palmtops/electronic databases could result
    in disqualification of the candidate
  • Please do not use an audible alarm clock!
  • Photography is not permitted

Simulated patients
  • Mix of actors and trained role players
  • Well trained, rehearsed and standardised
  • Consultations conducted in English
  • No current assessment role
  • Treat with courtesy and respect but ask for
    clarification if patients history not understood
  • Examine with care

Examiners
  • Examine one case only
  • Unobtrusive
  • Avoid eye contact
  • Mark during and afterwards
  • No direct interaction between examiner and
    candidate
  • Ignore unless specific intervention by the
    Examiner

What is it like?
  • Consultation with patients in a primary care
    setting
  • You can write on the notes and this will not be
    marked, but
  • If a script is written, give it to the role
    player and this may be marked
  • Please note removal of any paperwork provided
    may result in disqualification from the
    examinations
  • If you finish early do not worry as not all cases
    take 10 minutes

Shadow Marking
  • May have TWO assessors coming in for quality
    assurance purposes
  • One is the marker
  • The second shadow marks but does not contribute
    to your score. It is used to measure quality of
    the marking process
  • Treat both assessors the same (i.e. ignore them!)

  • Be familiar with syllabus and marking domains

  • Discuss and practice cases with colleagues
  • Familiar with at least one consultation model

  • Relax be yourself!
