The Interstate Compact for Military Children

• Signed into law June 16th during ceremony
  attended by 150 representatives of the military
  and veterans groups
• Virginia is the 10th state to adopt the compact
• Creates a uniform policy for transfers of
  military children between participating school
  systems
• Addresses the major difficulties children face
  due to frequent relocations
• Governor Kaine signed an additional 12 bills
  into law during the ceremony that will positively
  affect over 200,000 service members and veterans
  of the Commonwealth

The Military Family Relief Fund

• Administered by the Citizen Soldier Support
  Council
• Funds primarily provided by contributions of the
  Commonwealths citizens
• This years General Assembly Session resulted in
  a 100,000 allocation for the Fund
• Fund saw an increase in monetary contributions
  due to contributions from the Virginia Income Tax
  Form
• Fund has entered in a partnership with Honor
  Grounds Coffee who will highlight the Heroes of
  the Commonwealth and donate a percentage of sales
  to the fund
• Balance as of June 30th was 338,000

Military Child Education Coalition

• Virginia National Guard working with the Living
  in the New Normal (LINN) initiative to provide
  increased support to the military family
• LINN was developed through collaboration with
  experts in the fields of trauma and grief,
  resiliency, health care, and child development
• LINN encourages families to ensure children have
  the tools to cope with lifes storms through
  support and education
• National Guard will hold four conferences for
  education of counselors and staff to implement
  the program in locations across the Commonwealth
  in 2009
