Why did the US get involved?

• German U-boats started sinking our ships
• Zimmerman Telegram
• US had close economic, historical and cultural
  ties with the Allies, (especially Britain and
  France)
• Germans seen as aggressive, cruel and
  undemocratic they needed to be stopped

• People had to ration their food and gasoline
• Industries had to mobilize for war (begin making
  more weapons war supplies)
• Many young men enlisted or were drafted
• People bought war bonds to help support the war

• First amendment rights restricted in the name of
  national security (Espionage and Sedition Acts).
  Many people are arrested/fined for speaking their
  minds.

  illegal (communism, anarchism)

• Women have new opportunities to work in industry
• Women gain respect for their service in helping
  the war effort nurses, drivers, etc.

• Many blacks join service, earn respect by
  fighting for their country
• Many blacks move out of the South to the North to
  take over jobs in factories and industries (The
  Great Migration)
• More black communities in Northern cities, they
  spread their culture
• This change in Northern cities causes a few race
  riots some Northern whites didnt want blacks
  taking jobs, changing the culture
