  • They make expectations regarding quality and
    performance of hospitals explicit and universal
  • They provide a basis for self-assessment and
    external evaluation
  • They facilitate the identification of areas for
    improvement and planning of improvement
    activities
  • They help to identify levels of responsibility
  • They help to assess training needs
  • They can be used as a management and planning
    instrument

Why to create our own standards
  • the basic contents and principles of all
    standards are very much the same e.g. focus on
    patient/customer satisfaction, on processes
    (instead of input-output only), and on leadership
    and communication
  • Standards are usually protected by copy rights
    and for Govt. Hospitals it is not feasible to pay
    large amounts of money for the use of standards
    and accreditation services
