Insecticide Sprays Do Not Lower Populations
99 Mortality is needed to reduce insect
populations
Example 100 OFM insects
Kill 98 insects -- 2 remain
1 male 1 female
1st flight 200 eggs from 2 insects
Mating Disruption excellent for population
reduction reduced sprays

Does Mating Disruption Reduce Worm Infestations?

4 years of trials with UC Co-op Ext. in
collaboration with Walnut Pest Management
Alliance
Several Thousands of walnut acres with Puffer
technology
Demonstrated reduced Codling Moth damage and
reduced populations
Fewer insecticide sprays-excellent worm control

Organic Certification
  • CheckMate Dispensers are OMRI certified
  • OFM-O and CM-OEPA approvalNOP logo
  • EPA is approved for 3rd party approvalEPA
    OMRIWSDA approval
  • Organic certifier should be satisfied that NOP
stamp is acceptable for organic production (NOP
    memo of 3/5/08 to verify)

17
Puffer TechnologyAdvanced mating disruption
  • What Is A Puffer?

18
Puffer
200 days of Pheromone Puffs OFM CM
Puffs _at_ 500 PM until 500 AM every 15 mins. 48
puffs/night
19
Cabinet and Can
Units operate on 4 D-cell batteries
(included)Batteries will last the entire season
20
How does the Puffer fit into my existing program?
  • Place Puffer in orchards before anticipated
    biofix.
  • Place as high as possible in the trees

Puffers
  • OMF-O and CM-O 200 days regardless of weather
    conditions
  • Less LaborOFM 1 puffer/acre CM 1
    puffer/2 acres (UC recommendation)
  • Evenly disperse Puffers throughout orchards
  • Border perimeter trees with dispensers or place
Puffers on the edge (dispensers hung 2 rows
    around perimeter)
  • Flag row and tree where Puffer is hung

  • 1 CM puffer per 2 acres in a square grid
    pattern
  • Year to Year comparisons
  • Year 1 - Reduce CM populations with a full
    spray program.
  • Year 2 Manage populations by catches in DA
    combo
  • traps
  • Year 3 Start to reduce supplemental
    pesticides

Long Term Reduction
  • 1st year mating disruption typically use same
    number insecticide sprays
  • 2nd year mating disruption typically can reduce
    number of sprays
  • 3rd year see greatest benefit
  • Puffers can reduce the CM population long term

CheckMate OFM Vs. Twin Tubes OFM
Walt Bentley UC Trials2005/2006
Discussion The 2006 study showed no difference in
efficacy between the two OFM mating disruption
treatments. This conclusion is based on bait
bucket trap catches, pheromone trap catches,
shoot strike counts, and OFM infestation. There
was a highly significant difference (Fishers
Protected LSD, 0.01 level) between the trap
catches in the OFM bait buckets and the Trece
Kairomone lure. The Kairomone does not provide
information on moth abundance. Another important
result of this test was found from the last
series of shoot strikes taken in August. The
shoot strikes increased dramatically from the
previous reading and, when compared to August
2005, were substantially higher than the previous
year. This may be due to dispensers losing
pheromone during the hot July and early August
period. Shoot strikes may be a good indication
of such breakdown.
