MU-JHU CARE Background
  • MU-JHU has conducted NIH supported HIV research
    prevention activities in Uganda since 1988
  • The initial Collaborative partnership was with
    Case Western Reserve University before the PIs
    moved to Johns Hopkins University
  • In 2006, MU-JHU Research Collaboration was
    incorporated as a legal entity (MU-JHU CARE LTD)
    to enable MU-JHU to seek and receive direct
    Program funding to support its families

mother to child HIV transmission

The MUJHU HIVNET 012 Trial Results -1999
  • 50 reduction in HIV transmission when mothers
    and newborns received Nevirapine compared to
    those who got Zidovudine (16 vs 26 at 18 mths)
  • Nevirapine was safe and well tolerated
  • The Single Dose NVP regimen has formed the basis
    for the rapid expansion of PMTCT across the
    developing world
  • However, there are concerns about emergence of
    resistance after sd NVP in mothers and infants

  • NVP repeat pregnancy study
  • HIVIGLOB/SWEN study done in Uganda, India, and
    Ethiopia
  • HPTN 046 study infant NVP prophylaxis
  • HPTN 027-neonatal ALVAC vaccine trial
  • P1060 /ILA HAART in NVP exposed and non
    exposed children
