Quick Masking

• Similar principle to selections
• Lets you edit any selection as a mask
• Use almost any Photoshop tool or filter to modify
  mask
• Photoshop converts mask to selection

Degrees of Selection

• Black pixels are masked
• White pixels are unmasked
• 254 shades of grey between black and white allow
  for many levels of partial masking

Quick Masking and Selections

• Masks allow for easy soft selections (shades of
  grey)
• Simple selections are quite black and white
• Can convert between the quick masks and
  selections
• May want to use Selections and/or Quick Mask
  depending upon purpose

Using your Quick Mask

• Edit in Standard Mode (Q) button to convert
  Quick Mask into Selection ready for altering
  image.
• Pixels less than 50 selected are not shown in
  selection
• Menu Select -gt Inverse will reverse selected and
  unselected areas
• Add to selected area using standard selection
  tools, or
• Edit in Quick Mask Mode (Q) button to convert
  Selection into Quick Mask ready for
  creating/adjusting mask.

Hue/Saturation/Lightness

• Image -gt Adjustments -gt Hue/Saturation
• HSB is alternative colour model to RGB
• Typical uses
• Shift colour of image
• Alter intensity of colours
• Lighten or darken image

Hue

• Re-assigns every colour in image by shifting the
  colour spectrum left or right
• Often youll want to select part of your image to
  adjust, rather than adjusting the entire image

Saturation

• Increases or decreases the intensity of colours
• 0 saturation takes away all colour information
  leaving a black and white image
• Increasing saturation can make a dull image have
  more lively colours
