1
NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AGRICULTURE FOR RABI
CAMPAIGN -2004
  • GUJARAT STATE

2
Agriculture Scenario In Gujarat
  • The total geographical area of the state is
    196.12 lakh hectares
  • Reported area is 188.12 lakh hectares
  • The net cultivated area is about 94.99 lakh
    hectares.
  • Out of which about 36.27 lakh hectares are under
    irrigation.

3
  • There is a wide annual variation in rainfall.
  • Erratic rainfall affecting the productivity of
    the crops.
  • Out of 225 talukas of the state, as many as 56
talukas are drought-prone which suffer from
drought or scarcity condition at regular
    interval.
  • Draught, Flood and Cyclone raise after some
interval badly affect agriculture of the state
and also economy of the farmers.

4
Agriculture Scenario In Gujarat
  • Our natural resources base of land, water and bio
diversity is under severe stress and threat of
erosion and depletion. Thus, some of which are
    formidable .
  • Two third of population in Gujarat is engaged in
agriculture and earn livelihood directly from
    this occupation

5
Agriculture In GujaratCurrent Season
  • State received quite insufficient and erratic
rain during the month of July 2004,
  • Only few district of State received life saving
    rainfall for crops.
  • As a result state suffered a semi drought
condition and crop condition of kharif crop badly
    affected.

6
Agriculture In GujaratCurrent Season
  • Heavy rain during the last week of July 2004 and
also continued in second week of August in the
    south Gujarat Agriculture
  • Crops badly affected due to flood, soil erosion
water logging in some parts of the districts.
  • Second dry spell in September, may affect the
crops at critical stage like flowering and may
    resulted in lower production.

7
Agriculture In GujaratCurent Season
  • Heavy rainfall and Flood, destroyed the standing
    crops.
  • Crops like sugarcane, paddy, tur, cotton, ragi,
jowar maize etc are affected in South and
    middle Gujarat.
  • Problem of Leptospiroses disease in human being
arise in some parts of South Gujarat during 3rd
    week of August.

CONSTRAINS FOR ACHIEVEMENT OF AREA AND PRODUCTION
TARGET KHARIF-2004
  • Stress, Shortfall of rainfall during initial crop
growing stage affected the crop growth.
  • Heavy rain after long dry spell also affect the
standing crops and also soil erosion .
  • Even though, after sufficient rainfall, only 62
of the live stock irrigation water in major and
medium irrigation project is available till
    today.
  • North Gujarat will be affected in coverage of
irrigation due to less availability of irrigation
    water.

14
CONSTRAINS FOR ACHIEVEMENT OF AREA AND PRODUCTION
TARGET KHARIF-2004
  • Two main crop of state Groundnut and cotton are
affected due to stress, will be resulted in lower
    production .
  • Due to poor irrigation facilities, restrict
    sustainable agriculture development even though
    states efforts for strengthen sustainable
agriculture by optimum use of resources.
  • Crops also suffered from dry spell in September ,
will be create possibility of lower production.

15
SOME GOOD EFFORTS OF STATE FOR ACHIEVEMENT OF
AREA AND PRODUCTION TARGET IN KHARIF-2004
  • State has been made and implemented village wise
    crop plan during kharif season
  • State Agriculture Department prepared and
implemented contingency plan during stress and
    flood condition.
  • State provides subsidy for seed to the farmers
which suffered from stress and flood condition.
  • Extension functionary play an importance role
for given technical guidance to the farmers at
    proper time.
  • Farmers also benefited under different
    agriculture development scheme.

16
  • CROP-WISE
  • AREA AND PRODUCTION
  • TARGET
  • FOR
  • RABI - SUMMER-2004

17
CROP-WISE AREA AND PRODUCTION TARGET FOR
RABI/SUMMER 2004-2005.
18
CROP-WISE AREA AND PRODUCTION TARGET FOR
RABI/SUMMER 2004-2005.
19
STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING THESE RESULT
  • (i)  The entire production programmed has been
    designed according to natural resources
available in various Agro climatic zones.
  • (ii)  To increase the coverage under quality
    seeds/planting material.
  • (iii)  To increase crop planting density with
    the help of latest technologies
  • (iv)  Bridging the gap between demonstrated
yield and average yield. Encouraging the shift
from high volume low value crop to low volume
    high value crop.

20
STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING THESE RESULT
  • Judicious use of irrigation potential.
  • Saving of 30 irrigation water by adopting drip
and sprinkler irrigation system and there by
    increasing the irrigation intensity.
  • Easy ,assured and timely availability of quality
agricultural inputs especially in remote and
    tribal areas.
  • Encouraging plant protection through integrated
    pest management.

21
STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING THESE RESULT
  • Promoting the use of biotechnology and organic
    farming for enhanced value addition.
  • Facilitating high tech agriculture with
greenhouse, tissue culture, drip irrigation etc.
  • To disseminate information of modern technology
    and related infrastructure through transmission
of creative real time agricultural practices
    though mass media.
  • Direct link to farmers by the means of video
conferencing. Regularly press notes about current
issues for crop production given in vernacular
    news papers by agriculture department.

22
STRATEGIES FOR ACHIEVING THESE RESULT
  • Focused special programs for tribal area and for
small and marginal farmers to raise their income
    level above poverty line.
  • Coordination with non-Government organization.
  • Giving Soil Health Card to individual farmer. So
that farmer can aware about soil, fertility
status use of fertilizer by this way, knowing
about soil, farmer of Gujarat should planned for
crop in advanced. It will be helpful for planning
    for rabi crops.
  • Village wise crop planning for rabi crops has
    been made.

23
FERTILIZER REQUIREMENT AND AVAILABILITY FOR
RABISUMMER
24
SEED REQUIREMENT AND AVAIBILITY FOR RABISUMMER
25
NEW INTERVENTION
26
NEW INTERVENTION-SOIL HEALTH CARD
  • Looking to the importance of soil analysis State
Government has implemented soil health card
    programme under Macro Management Scheme.
  • Under this project 10 soil samples per village
    were collected from 18218 villages.
  • Soil health card include the information like,
name of farmers, holding survey number, soil
analysis data, fertilizer to be applied,

27
NEW INTERVENTION-SOIL HEALTH CARD
  • Samples are analyzes and soil health card had
been given to the 1.80 lakh farmers.
  • Based on the soil analysis report farmers will be
advised about requirement of fertilizer, as well
as the alternative cropping pattern, for Rabi
    season.
  • Village wise crop planning has been made for
Kharif season and also progressive in rabi.

28
NEW INTERVENTION-SOIL HEALTH CARD
  • This programme will be continued in full form
and state has planned for phase wise covered 37
    lakh farmers under this programme.

29
NEW INTERVENTION-SOIL HEALTH CARD
  • The master data bank will be created at State
level and helpful in village level cropping
    planning, increasing productivity with balanced
    use of fertilizer.
  • For strengthening SOIL HEALTH CARD programme ,
request to sanctioning extra fund for
    strengthening soil testing laboratories and
Information technology for creating E-data bank
    Gujkrishinet under Macro management scheme.

30
NEW INTERVENTIONVILLAGE WISE CROP PLANNING
  • During kharif 2004, village wise crop wise
planning has been made on the basis of Soil
Health Card with the help of Agriculture
Scientists to get the maximum net return from
    unit area.
  • District and Taluka wise Agriculture Scientists
are nominated for giving technical guidance
directly to the farmers in crop sowing, package
of practices, disease and pest management ,
balanced use of fertilizer use, efficient use of
irrigation and with other latest technology
    available in agriculture.
  • Technical man powers in agriculture field is
nearer to the farmers now due to Soil Health Card
Programme and Village Wise Crop Plan.

31
NEW INTERVENTION- VILLAGE WISE CROP PLANNING
BASED ON SOIL ANALYSIS
  • The aim is that the farmers get better knowledge
    for crop production technique and
    diversification.
  • Similarly for next rabi season, village wise crop
wise planning is being done on the basis of Soil
    Health Card .
  • Strengthen crop diversification with law value
added to high value added crops with the use of
    soil health card programme.
  • Farmers data bank would be created under this
    programme.
