- The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) is the UK's
largest professional association and union for
nurses, with over 380,000 members. Most RCN
members work in the NHS, with around a quarter
working in the independent sector. -
- The RCN works locally, nationally, and
internationally to promote standards of care and
the interests of patients and nurses, and of
nursing as a profession. The RCN is a major
contributor to the development of nursing
practice, standards of care and health policy.

5By the year 2010 nurses will reach for e-tools
(on-line reference, mouse, light pen etc) as
readily as they reach now for the pen, reference
book or the telephone

7Nursing InformaticsDefinition
Blum (1986) identified three core elements of
(nursing) informatics including
Data discrete entities that are described
objectively without interpretation Information
Data that are interpreted, organised or
structured Knowledge Information that has been
synthesised so that interrelationships are
identified and formalised
8From Data collectors toInformation managers
- Nurses communicate with patients, their families
and other members of the multidisciplinary team. - Nurses study patients records and add
observations and planned care to it. - Nurses monitor instruments that report on
patients condition, - Nurses perform tests and review the results of
tests performed by others.
We not only use patients/clients data extensively
but also obtain and record much of it thus
enabling it to become structured and meaningful
information.
9From Data collectors toInformation managers
ontoKnowledge Workers
- Pravikof, Pierce and tanner (2005)
- 64.5 of nurses report needing information
weekly or several times weekly, only 26.7 have
recived training in using tools to access
evidence - Only 11 cite searching information from
evidence weekly or more often - Nearly half (48.5) are not familiar with the
term Evidence based Practice (USA!)
10UK Evidence (RCN Information Needs Analysis)
- Nurses with best access to information are more
likely to change practice as a result of research - Employers attitudes are crucial
- Significant numbers still have no or limited
access to computers at work - Nurses in the independent or community sectors
are more likely to have less access to information
11Is ECDL a vehicle to empower nursing
professionals and assist in their transition onto
Knowledge workersORis ECDL perceived as a
threat to the professional who sees it as a
training tool for data input operators
12RCN Survey on NHS IT Developments (2004/5) N
3000
13Q10. In your opinion, what effect will the
integrated electronic health care records
development have on clinical care?
14Q11. What effect will the integrated electronic
health care records development have on your
working life?
15Q12. How important a priority is the integrated
electronic health care records development for
the NHS at this time?
16Q17. How important is the provision of training
to the success of integrated electronic health
care records?
17Q18. How much IT training have you received
within working time in the last six months?
18They also told us
- Very helpful to be given the opportunity to
undertake the "ECDL". Although fully paid for by
NHS, the "ECDL" has to be done in own time, with
no allocation for learning in work time, despite
it being essential that we have computer skills
in order to function in the workplace.
19- I completed the ECDL last year but still find
that even more knowledge would make me more time
efficient. My IT skills now are often greater
than that of clerical staff and I find myself
inputting data and performing other
administrative tasks. This is not a good use of
my time
20- I am not very technologically minded and find it
hard to learn IT skills and retain aspects that I
do not use every day e.g. PowerPoint
presentations so I tend to muddle through and
seek help from a secretary at my terminal when I
get stuck. To access hospital in house training
requires being able to commit to a half day
session and pre book I find I end up cancelling
because clinical issues take priority.
21- I think we need to look at the training of
nurses and health care assistants in IT.
Especially at how and who is doing training.
Computers and IT training can be very
intimidating to some nurses and often the
trainers are highly skilled IT experts who
intimidate you even more.
22To conclude.
23Education Lobby HEI for informatics as a core
nursing competency within curriculum
Comprehension Relate it to the nursing
clinical world and to Evidence Based Practice
(The IM in IMT), Development Link training
into other professional development opportunities
(Audit, Clinical Governance, RD) and grow
in-house champions (how did I use PP for patient
education)Life Long LearningBreak units into
chunks which could be accessed on intranet for
refreshing skills and just for fun.Make ECDL
part of the learning culture rather then
majoring on the training elementsbuthey,
you are the experts!
