Current Project Objectives
  • Recommend and demonstrate to the CEC approaches
    for the comparability of techniques and
    methodologies for data gathering and analysis,
    data management, and electronic data
    communications for promoting access to publicly
    available electric utility emissions
  • Identify, collect, and review existing sources
    of electric generating utility (EGU) emissions
    and activity databases, and provide a summary of
    the state-of-science
  • Build a prototype web browser tool to query,
    retrieve, and explore emissions data from
    heterogeneous databases

The projects focus is on criteria pollutants and
toxics because of their availability and
accessibility.

Guiding Principles
  • Distributed. The data sources remain distributed
    and in the control of their providers. The data
    are dynamically accessed through the internet
    rather than through a central repository.
  • Non-intrusive. Data providers are more likely to
    participate if joining an integrated network does
    not impose new or additional burden on them.
  • Transparent. The distributed data should appear
    to originate from a single database to the end
    user. One stop shopping and one interface to
    multiple data sets are desired without required
    special software or download on the users
    computer.
  • Flexible/Extendable. An emissions network should
    be designed with the ability to easily
    incorporate new data and tools from new nodes
    joining the network so that they can be
    integrated with existing data and tools.

Embedded Images and Controllers in a Web Page

The controllers and map image view can be linked
and assembled in a web page. Changing the
settings of a controller changes the URL of the
map image and updates the web page. The web
page can be constructed using standard web
application programming languages, such as
JavaScript and ASP.

on-the-fly, without requiring substantial changes

  • ESIP Federation facilitates the flow of Earth
    Science data into air quality management systems

Evolution of an AQ Cluster
Air Quality is one of 12 Applications of National
Priority as defined by NASA and is one of 5
National Application Areas most frequently
selected as an area of interest by ESIP members
and stakeholders. January 2005 An air quality
focus group met during the 2005 ESIP Winter
Meeting to discuss how ESIP might play a role in
advancing the use of earth science data in air
quality management. Interest is high within ESIP
and air quality is recommended as a new ESIP
cluster. March 2005 A draft strawman report is
generated that outlines the formation of an ESIP
AQ Cluster. The report is circulated among
potential stakeholders within EPA, NOAA, and
NASA. Interest within EPA is high. March 2005
ESIP meets with ESRI and EPA/ORD and EPA/OEI to
discuss ideas for an ESIP Federation Portal. Air
quality is identified as the area of focus for
the demonstrating and developing a portal and the
AQ Cluster is asked to assist in developing the
AQ component of the portal. Today An objective
in presenting the AQ Cluster today is to gain
feedback, recruit participants, and conceptually
enhance the goals of the cluster.

Information flow networks being developed
FASTNET (existing project) an established real
time project for real time access and synthesis
of surface, satellite, and model data that could
be strengthened as part of the AQ Cluster
ESRI/ESIP Portal (under development) Develop
web resource for consolidated access to air
quality related data products and
visualization/analysis tools. Also will provide
collaboration tools to foster development of
other AQ information chains.
Supplement VIEWS with satellite data (being
planned)- Provide convenient mechanisms for
semi-automated access, processing and synthesis
of satellite derived aerosol parameters
coinciding with surface air quality monitors for
comparison in VIEWS system.
