Breastfeeding and Pandemic H1N1 Influenza

• Continue to breastfeed if you have the flu
• Breastfeeding gives your baby antibodies
• Increase the number of feedings to give the baby
  additional antibodies
• Dont cough or sneeze on the baby
• (may need to wear a mask)
• Wash your hands and the babys hands before and
  after feeding

• If you are too sick to breastfeed, pump the milk
  and bottle feed frequently
• You can continue to breastfeed while taking
  medicine prescribed by your doctor
• Talk to your doctor before taking
• over-the-counter medicine
• Call the babys doctor to tell him/her you
• are ill

Keep Baby Healthy

• Limit sharing of babys toys with
• other children
• Wash toys with soap and water
• Keep babys pacifier out the mouths
• of others
• Early and frequent skin-to-skin contact of mother
  and baby is encouraged
• Baby should sleep in a separate bed
