12The Post 9/11 GI Bill Complements GrADSO
- Quick Overview for Cadets
- DoD Policy is written into law, but Army policy
is still under development - Must Serve 3 years past commissioning ADSO to be
eligible for benefits - Most likely, these 3 years will be served
concurrently with all other obligations - Benefits are based on highest in-state
undergraduate tuition. For example - Virginia allows 9,743 to 10,048
- Darden School at UVA is 40,500
- Yellow-Ribbon matching has yet to be codified,
but would allow the University of Virginia to
reach an agreement with the Veterans
Administration (VA) whereby the VA and the
university would each pay about 15,000 to cover
the 30,000 not covered by the post 9/11 GI Bill.
- Soldiers and officers may transfer benefits to
dependents and incur a 4 year ADSO at the time of
transfer.

14Things To Consider Before Making This Decision
- The GrADSO and Post 9/11 GI Bill actually
complement each other well as the benefits accrue
concurrently - With the GI Bill, I dont need GrADSO An
officer who serves on active duty long enough to
accrue benefits under the GI Bill would serve the
same amount of time to earn the GrADSO option.
The officer should volunteer for GrADSO to
increase her options and retain the flexibility
and benefits of both programs. - I want to keep my options open - If an officer
assesses the option value of not committing until
year 4 at greater than 160,000 in the case of
Virginia then the officer should not participate
in GrADSO - I dont know which benefit I will use - The
programs together expand the choices an officer
has if an officer chooses not to exercise the
graduate school option, that officer retains the
benefits of the GI Bill. - What will I do with 6 years of benefits? An
officer who elects to GrADSO gains 2 years of
benefits from GrADSO and 4 years from the GI
Bill. For an officer who chooses to exercise the
graduate school option, that officer can then
immediately transfer benefits and serve two ADSOs
concurrently.
15Three Things Cadets Must Consider Before Making
This Decision
- Does he or she intend to stay in through Company
Command? - If so, this option costs nothing.
- Company command requires 7-8 years of service in
most cases. - What might the four or five years on Reserve
status look like? - If you are in the Selective Reserves
- 1 Weekend a Month, 2 Weeks a Year ?
- Potential for Active Duty Activation ?
- If you are in the IRR Potential for Active Duty
Activation - What are the chances of attending full-time or
fully-funded graduate school if a cadet does not
participate in this program? - Currently about a 1 in 10 chance. (352 positions
for over 5,000 officers) - If you stay through company command, chances
improve to 1 in 5 - Compare benefits with New GI Bill
16Dual Program Participation
- Cadets may Participate in up to 2 of the 3
- Career Incentive Programs
- Career Incentive Program ADSOs are served
Consecutively with initial commissioning ADSO - Incentive ADSOs are served Concurrently with all
non-statutory ADSOs - Incentive ADSOs may be served Concurrently with
Graduate School attendance - Incentive ADSOs are served Concurrently with any
accrued ADSOs (PCS, army schooling, etc) - Except Graduate School for Aviation Officers
