1SUCCESS BY DESIGN NOT BY CHANCE
2Many involved in school re-invention work would
argue that change is the most talked about and
least acted upon concept in education today.

4Educator Deficit Disorder
- A sense of hopelessness
- A sense of exhaustion when confronted by problems
and challenges that seem to be more difficult
than in the past - Challenges are not responding to traditional
medicine (approaches) - Cynicism as a result of reform efforts coming and
going
5The disease is based on the damaging belief that
all efforts at school reform are doomed.
6We live in a world of possibilities . . .
when we believe it,
well see it.
7Stop waiting for the cure you are the cure!!
8Three Resistance Factors
91. Clutter and Doubt
102. TO BE NORMAL
- Our evolution as humans has provided us a
powerful survival tool. Routines, Habits,
Protocols.. - This is all a good thing except for when we must
change or innovate.
11Short term survival requires routines. Long term
survival requires significant change.
12Why arent there more students achieving at
higher levels?
133. Innovation depends on a healthy dose of
failure.
14There can be no keener revelation of a societys
soul than the way in which it treats its children.
15So let me offer some suggestions for success.
16BEING EXTRAORDINARY
17BEING EXTRAORDINARY
- Committed to the truth
- Be committed to delaying gratification
- Be someone who always has the chance of saying
yes - Live a life where you do not make others wrong
18BEING EXTRAORDINARY
- Be committed to courage
- Be someone who produces results with absolutely
no force - Be a person who is peaceful in chaos
19BEING EXTRAORDINARY
- Be committed to courage
- Be someone who produces results with absolutely
no force - Be a person who is peaceful in chaos
- Be committed to managing success, while being

21Listen to the children
- To take children seriously is to value them for
who they are now rather than seeing them as
adults in the making.
22KEY QUESTIONS TO GUIDE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
23Who needs to understand what? How can teachers,
parents, students, and the community own the
problem and support the strategies were
implementing?
24Is my desire for success to improve my system or
classroom strong enough to prompt me to change my
thinking?
25Whats our theory of action our strategy for
solving this problem and the reason it will bring
about the desired outcome?
