Sometimes whales like to look around above
the water. To do this, a whale pokes its
head straight out of the water . Then it
looks around. This is called spyhopping.

How Do Whales Communicate?
Whales use many body parts to communicate
with. Some use their lower jaws or fins.
They also communicate by touching. Belugas
are so noisy. They make hundreds of
different sounds. They can whinny like a
horse, cry like a baby, squeak like
a rusty hinge, or sound like a woman
screaming. Humpbacks sing. Lots of times
their songs repeat over and over for
about one half hour.

Why Do Whales Spout Off?
  • When whales spout off, they are letting
air out of their lungs. The air is coming
    from their blowholes.
