Title: Comparing Assessment

1
Rummage Sale by Barbara M. Jossee
2
My mother is having a rummage sale. She is
selling all my old puzzles that she says I don't
play with. To make room. She is selling my
goldfish bowl because we don't have a goldfish.
To make room. She is selling some books (which I
might want to read), some broken toys (which are
still good for trading), and my set of drums
(which are not too loud). All to make room.
3
You know what we are making room for? That
baby.
4
If you ask me, and no one does, that baby
is a pain. Everybody spends a lot of time with it
and not so much with me. Everybody thinks that
baby is so great, and nobody notices me. I even
have to share my room with it. My room that used
to have a bunch of puzzles, a goldfish bowl, some
books, some broken toys, and a set of drums.
5
I wish I could sell that baby. I'm selling him
at my own rummage sale. He will cost 6.49,
because that's exactly how much a Junior Disguise
Kit costs. And I want a Junior Disguise Kit. It
has a fake nose and glasses. It has a fake
mustache. It has black stuff you can put on your
teeth to look as if you don't have teeth.
6
Here comes my first customer. It's a lady, and
she's carrying a purse. That's a good
sign. "What kind?" asks a man, pointing to the
baby. "A boy."
7
"Oh, that's too bad," says the man. "I was
looking for a girl. Girls are better, you know.
Softer hair, softer cheeks, smarter." "They are
not," I say. "Brothers are as good as sisters.
Did you ever touch this kid's cheek?" I ask,
touching my brother's cheek to show the man how.
"Soft as anything. And his hair is soft, too. And
this baby is as smart as any girl."
8
"Well," says the man, "that may be true, but I'm
looking for a girl. While I'm waiting for my
next customer I touch my brother's cheek again.
He laughs. I tickle it, and he laughs again. I
think he knows who I am. My next customer is a
kid. "Nice baby," he says. "A little wrinkly
though."
9
'They're all like that," I tell him. "And this
one's better than most." "Well, he's pretty
neat. Can he do anything?" "Can he do anything?
Of course he can. Watch this." I show the kid the
tickling game.
10
Pretty neat, he says. Can he do anything
else? "Sure," I say. "He breathes when you're
asleep. So, if you wake up, you can hear him
breathing and you're not lonely in your
room." "Great!" says the kid. "How much is
he?" Six forty-nine," I say, thinking of the
Junior Disguise Kit.
11
"Oh," says the kid. "That's too much. I don't
have 6.49. Will you sell him for 12 cents to a
very good home?" No," I say. "Well, if you
change your mind, let me know," says the kid,
jingling some money in his pocket.
12
OK," I say, handing Andy his rattle. Andy
sticks his rattle in his mouth. He keeps doing
that, sticking the rattle in his mouth. One time
he pokes it in his eye by mistake, but most of
the time he gets it in his mouth. That's pretty
good, I think, for a baby. He's got very good aim
and will probably be good at bean-bags when he
grows up a little. I used to have a bean-bag
game, but I traded it for the goldfish bowl
because it wasn't fun to play by myself.
13
Next comes another lady. "What do you have for
sale?" she asks. "Andy, my brother," I say.
"Well," she says, "I was looking for an ironing
board. Thank you anyway."
14
Can you believe it? That lady wanted an ironing
board when she could have bought Andy! She must
be crazy. An ironing board just stands there.
Andy makes breathing sounds when I'm sleeping. He
plays that tickling game. He already knows me,
which proves that he is very smart. And he's
beginning to practice for bean-bags. That lady
didn't buy Andy, but what if somebody does? I'm
not so sure I want to sell him any more. I
will buy your baby for 6.49," says a voice.
15
The voice is my mother's. She is holding
6.49. She is taking me to the toy store. I am
holding Andy, and I have 6.49 in my pocket for
the Junior Disguise Kit.
16
There it is. I try on the fake glasses and nose.
I look hysterical. I try on the fake mustache. I
look a hundred years old, at least. I think about
surprising my grandma with black teeth. Next to
the disguise kit is a bean-bag game. The board is
a clown's head with its mouth open, and there are
lots of different colored bean-bags. A kid could
teach a brother how to toss a bean-bag. Then a
kid and her brother could play. And a baby who
was too young to play could even poke around a
little at those colored bags.
17
Andy and I pay for our bean-bag game at the
cash register. I think Andy would have been
afraid of me with that mustache on, anyway.
18
Terrance cant believe they would really sell a
baby.
Valerie wants mom to have another baby.
Dan is the only boy in a family and he has two
high school sisters.
Denise thinks the story doesnt make sense--at
first!

something like play or jump or just for fun.

I know how she feels. I doubt she would sell it.
This is sort of easy. She must really want that
Junior Disguise Kit if she wants to sell the baby.

I think its mean of the girl to try to sell her
baby brother

really buy the baby--will they? She really really
wants to sell that baby. This is a nice story
