Title: What Role Does GIS Play During a Severe Weather Event

1
What Role Does GIS Play During a Severe Weather
Event?
  • All-Hazard Standardized Map
  • Unified reporting tool used at the county level
  • Created as a result of February 2007 flooding
  • Can be accessed by the public from the IDHS
    homepage (www.in.gov/dhs)
  • Updates to the map are done as needed depending
the severity of the event and the status of each
    county

What Role Does GIS Play During a Severe Weather
Event?
  • A FEMA program known as HAZUS MH can assist with
    model runs
  • Specifically flooding for Indiana
  • HAZUS is also used for earthquake scenarios
(nationwide) and hurricanes along coastal areas
  • The POLIS Center at IUPUI used NWS and USGS
stream gauge data and flood reports to generate
flood maps during January 2008 flooding

What Role Does GIS Play During a Severe Weather
Event?
  • In January 2008 data was used to estimate the
number of homes affected by flood waters as well
as the extent to which the homes were flooded
  • Models are still being refined, but the output
gave a first guess as to the magnitude of the
    event
  • Individual addresses with flood reports were
generated by the model and placed in a GIS layer
  • Flood depth reporting and river gauge data are
    critical for accurate model runs!

White County
Carroll County
Tippecanoe River

What Role Does GIS Play During a Severe Weather
Event?
  • GIS also helps by allowing IDHS to map critical
infrastructure in areas of concern to make our
    response more effective
  • GIS allows us to see the big picture
  • Physically seeing the data on a map can be very
    beneficial to the operational picture

What Does YOUR Help Do for IDHS?
  • Eye-in-the-field reporting is critical for the
    most effective response from IDHS
  • Information provided from the field helps drive
the IDHS response and tells us where the most
    affected areas are
  • Without important information from the field IDHS
could not seek Federal disaster assistance
  • It is VERY important to report what you see and
know to your local authorities/EMA director
  • The more info we have, the better the response we
    can provide!
