Title: Wreck Diving in Cape Hatteras
1Wreck DivinginCape Hatteras
Join Sea Ventures in exploring the area of the
Ocean known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
History and great diving abound. There are wrecks
from every war from the Civil War era to World
War II. Three German submarines lost in combat
lie in the waters off North Carolina as well as
numerous U-boat prey. Before the days of modern
navigation, the shoals, fog and hurricanes took
their toll on civilian shipping as well. Cape
Hatteras is also strategically located as the
point of departure for the Gulf Stream as it
turns out to Sea. These currents bring with them
abundant sea life ranging from colorful Caribbean
reef fish to the large pelagics.
Our dive boat is the Akyla (pictured above). We
will be diving with Captain Dave Sommers. Dave
has been plying the waters off N.C. for 20 years.
You can expect the depths to range from 60 feet
to 130 feet. Visibility can range from 30 feet to
100 feet. Water temperatures are quite moderate
and will generally be in the 60s and 70s.
