Background
  • The office of Speaker is the highest ranking
    position
  • The Riksdag, or the Parliament, is the governing
    body that the speaker is elected to
  • The Riksdag underwent changes in 1867
  • As of 1917 the Riksdag has properly functioned as
    the parliament of Sweden
  • 1970- unicameral legislative body

Election Procedure
  • The Speaker is appointed by the members of the
    Riksdag
  • Elected for four years and cannot be removed.
  • Election of the Deputy Speakers and the clerk of
    the Chamber.
  • Since the 1982, the Speaker has been chosen from
    the largest party in the Riksdag majority.

  • He has been a member of the Riksdag for the
    Moderate Party since 1979
