  • The 1st National Black Political Convention
  • More commonly known as.
  • The Gary Convention
  • The convention was a culmination of a series of
    meetings

WHEN?
  • The series of meetings were held mostly in 1971
  • The first planning session for the convention was
    held on January 30th,1972
  • The 1st National Black Political Convention was
    held March 10th through 12th of 1972

  • Westside High School

WHY?
  • African American communities were faced with a
    severe economic and social crisis
  • The development of a unified political strategy
    for African Americans from 1972 and beyond was
    needed
  • Nothing short of fundamental change in the
    political and economic system could help

HOW?
  • A convenor was picked for every participating
    state
  • Delegates were selected from statewide political
    caucuses
  • All blacks holding elective office in a state
    automatically qualified as state delegates

THE AGENDA
  • Home rule for the District of Columbia
  • Establishment of the national network of
    community health centers
  • Establishment of system of national health
    insurance
  • Elimination of capital punishment
  • Creation of a new urban-based Homestead Act

  • Government guarantee of minimum annual income of
    5200 for a family of four
  • Minimum wage guarantee of 2.50
  • Establishment of a black United Fund
  • Effective enforcement of anti-trust legislation

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Home rule for the District of Columbia was
    approved on December 24th, 1973
  • NACHC National Association of Community Health
    Centers was established in 1971 and got great
    publicity after convention
  • National Health Care coverage is now spread more
    liberally

  • The elimination of Capital Punishment is still
    being discussed to this day
  • The new Urban- based Homestead Act was repealed
    in 1976
  • Minimum wage was granted at 2.50/hr. and is at a
    soaring 5.15-5.25 today!
  • Many Black United Funds have been established
    since then. Example UNCF

    in 1974, 1976, and in 1980
  • The Black Issue Convention began in Richmond,
    Virginia, and New Orleans
  • National Black Family Plan formed from
    deliberations from The National Black Leadership

  • The National Hip Hop Convention

  • The American system does not work for the
    masses of our people, and it cannot be made to
    work without radical, fundamental change
